Hi guys,

I'd like to upgrade my 10D to... either a 20D or a used 1D. What would you guys do ?
I mainly shoot fashion shows, race cars at the local race track, and sometimes landscape photography.
What would you consider as an upgrade to my 10D ?

From time to time I print a 40cm x60cm (15"x23")

Thanks,

MikeG

More megapixels + lower noise = bigger prints.
I think that you should go with the 20D, unless you want the durability and AF speed and accuracy of the 1-series body. If your 10D satisfies you in what you do - definitely get the 20D.

i would buy a used 1d... especially if speed is something you need at a track, or even w/ fashion work.

keep in mind that the 1d is a pro body, grip built in... even if you have one for your 10d it wont work on the 20d, so you have to shell out more loot for that

also keep in mind that the af on the 1d is faster then that of the 20d, w/ more focus points.

sure some will say that 4mp isnt as good as 8mp... but its the quality of the sensor that makes the differance. i have shot a 1d on several occasions and have been extremely imprssed w/ it - and seen prints as large as 40x60 from then. i currently own a 10d, and if i were in your shoes, id prob go used 1d

It's all a matter of what you shoot and How imprtant speed is and focus. The bottom line is how much do you want to spend. The 1D is a superior machine that is built like a tank both have the same basic processor inside. Id is a Cadilac and 10d a Buick or a high end Chevrolet. I chose the 1D MKII over the 20D The 1D series is like an L lens simply the best.

Just an opinion but I have owned the 1D2 and sold it after getting and using the 20d's. I now use 2 20d's and find them almost as fast as the 1d2.

for the $$ I chose the 20d.
for the prestige I chose the 1ds2.

for the assistant I chose the 20d.

Not had the 1d, but I expect its very good operationally. For resolution the 20d will give you a little better prints.

Sold 1dmkII

This surprises me to no end. I own a 10D and after about a year I reckon I'll buy me a 1D MKII. Can't afford the prestige of 1DS or god forbid, 1DS MKII, but well, 1D MKII is a bit more prestigeous (do I spel rite? :D) than 20D, 1.3 crop, is faster, more accurate focus, etc. etc. So why is it not worth the moneyses?

I've kind of been pondering the same thing. I have a 10D. I shoot 99.99% raw images with it and when I'm shooting events and action I'll use everyone of the 9 shots I can get before the buffer is full. Although the file size is bigger, the 6 frames of the 20D has made me hesitate. For those that have or had both, will the 20D dump the buffer faster than the 10D. I don't mean make room for another shot so much as dump the whole buffer so another series of shots can be taken? Although being able to fill the buffer and then keep shooting a frame as room is being made is also important.

I would really rather get the 1D MKII but I just can't justify spending the money for it. And I figure the 20D has been out long enough that the bugs are probably worked out of it by now.

you are kidding right? maybe you do a lot of slow action or no action shots such as posed portraits or landscapes where you wouldnt be taking advantage of the speed of the af, speed of the write times and the large buffers... but having shot both, there is no way that "almost as fast as" would come out of my mouth comparing a 1dmkII w/ a 20d.

i have heard of people selling the 1dmkII because they just didnt need all the bells and wistles of a pro body and getting 20d's, but then again they were not after speed in the first place

Mika Panic, ditto. Almost as fast? hahahahaha

Take the 1d MKII to a sporting event and then you realize you are getting every penny worth.
If you are not big on big prints, then I would say the 1D is better, since its much faster. If you are big on prints, then get the 20D, well actually the new rebel (in 2-3 months) is even better since it is $500 cheaper.

I'ld test a 1D before buying. IMHO you might be better of with a 20D (or 1DMk2 if finance allows). When shooting fashion shows, I presume you shoot high iso, and the 1D is terrible above ISO 1600 (just MHO off course). I've had the 10D, now have a 1DMk2, which is in repair at Canon, so I'm shooting a 1D now. Honestly, when shooting ISO 3200, I prefer the 10D.... Hope this doesn't get me flamed ;)

OK, thanks guys for your inputs.

Still have to make up my mind...

Like some users pointed out here ... it most likely depends on your focus.

Focus on fashion shows -> 20D
Focus on car races -> 1D
Can't make up your mind -> 1DII

Best regards,
Andy

1dMkII EVERY time. Its a great all rounder and even in the studio the speed and buffer characteristics, to my mind, give it the edge over the 1dsMkII. If you pose models in static positions then go large format.

In terms of the original question, (20D or used 1D) I'd go witht he 20D. In fact, that's exactly what I did. If you don't need the ruggedness and speed of the 1D, then the only other significant variable is the file size and image quality. The nod goes to higher resolution everytime, especially if you're considering large prints.

A no-brainer in my book.

What I really like with the 1D is its autofocus speed. If you focus on moving subject such as a car, you get the focus extremely fast compared to my 10D. Its weather sealing is also interesting when you're out in rain or snow.
The downside, for me, of the 1D is its resolution. I won't say I print a 40*60 each week, but if I make a good shot which is worth to be printed, Id like to be able to print it. Even on a 20cm X 30 cm print, the more pixels you have, the more details you get.

So I'd like to hear from someone who already brought its 20D to a race track. Is it fast enough ?

And about the 1D MkII, I can't really justify this expense. Otherwise I *know* it's the camera to get in my case.
