Is it worth paying the extra money for an IS lense? And when is the best time to use an IS lense? Thanks. And which IS lenses would be reommended for general use?

When  I have the $$$ to get the 70-200L f/2.8, I will opt the extra for the IS version.
I have owned both the IS and no-IS version of the 75-300, and find the IS makes it a lot more useable in lower light conditions which I am often shooting in.

Doesn't really halp much for faster moving subjects though, just helps handheld stuff, where you would notmally need a tripod.

Mode 2 IS is great for fast moving objects for panning. I can get crisp images when other wise I would have soft ones.

It all depends on usage. IS only really helps in low light situations. If you plan to take a majority of your shots outdoors on sunny days, then IS really won't do you any good.

IS helps in any hand-held telephoto shots. I use it all the time hiking and using my monopod & 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS. Low light is not the only use of IS.

I don't fully agree. One benefit of IS is to allow a slower shutter speed without a tripod, no matter daylight or indoor shots.

I stand corrected

I leave it on all the time, only turning it off when I'm shooting off a tripod. It's one of those things that's just there, and I don't really think about it that much.
