Hello All,
I have been reading and reading this excellent forum over the past few weeks.
Trying to decide to splash the cash on a Canon 20d.
Now my mind is made up, mid-march I will have my pre-ordered 350d.
Please can you offer some advice on lens choice. I have ordered the kit lens EFS 18-55.
I have also read that buying good lenses is a good investment.
Can someone explain the different grades of Canon lens available.
Also, suggestions for a good macro lens, and also a zoom lens to take me from the 55 up to 200 or 300mm.
Many thanks in advance.

we can talk about optical quality of lenses, but, quite often it's a quastion of personal preferences and taste. not a long time ago i learned that robert farber uses a 28-135 lens, and claims it's excellent. (and i believe he can afford any piece of photo equipment). if you check internet forums, you'll find that people are divided into two groups, one group says 28-135 is a crappy lens, the other group says - it's not that bad for the money.
when i bought my drebel, coming from powershot g2, i was shocked by the quality of ef-s 18-55, it looked to me perfect. now, i kind of hate it. i almost never use it. hard to say what is wrong with it. it's not the sharpness. to my taste, it's sharp enough. it's rather too much sharpness for the contrast this lens provides. again, to my taste, pictures taken with it look "thin".
may be it's not 18-55. quite possible that i just don't like zooms. prime lenses often give more beautiful pictures.
get any lens that looks convinient for you and fits into your budget. and get 50mm 1.8 - an excellent and very cheap lens.

Maybe a "little" off topic, but from whom did you pre-order the 350D, and where did you get the mid-march delivery date?

I am in the UK and pre-ordered from Park Cameras - www.parkcameras.com
They did say 'no promises' but should be mid-March.

hi guys! im just new to photgraphy and im planning to get a telephoto lens and the cheapest lens found was the EF75-300 usm II thesales people said its a good lens but if i wanted lens with macro i should get EF 55-200 USM II thats a bit more expensive than the first lens i mentioned. But if i like shooting moving subjects they suggested EF 75-300mm IS USM which is way expensive than the two lens. should i settle with the ef 75-300 usm II lens which is the cheapest one? Hope to hear advices from you guys since i dont know much about photography and lenses just started 2 weeks ago..:) thanks!

Just watch yourself cause once you buy one "L" lense the quality is such that you will want that for all your pics and it is expensive...

Let's keep one thing clear. IS won't stop subject motion, but it will make it easier for you to hand-hold at between 1/125 and 1/500 sec. so camera shake doesn't get in the way of your shots, whether the target's moving or still. This includes panning shots. That said, there are better lenses than the 75-300 (which is a 10-year old design). The salesman's probably trying to clear out his stock before he gets in its successor 70-300 IS that's just come out, and is supposed to be much better.

Much better options are the Sigma 70-300 APO DG and the CAnon 100-300 USM. I would take the Sigma for most things, including close up shots, but the Canon has a faster AF which may help at times, tho' you pay quite a bit more for no optical advantage.
