Depends ENTIRELY on what you need it for.
For casual snapshooting with display only onscreen or in small prints, it's a pretty good lens.
It's a little long for use on a cropped sensor.
It's no L lens, which I use for my daily shooting (this is my living), but I wouldn't hesitate to use it in the right (unpaid) situations. For family shooting, no question.

I had one for a while, and it was "okay". For the money, it's a decent walkaround. I always felt it was a bit soft, and the colors just didn't pop. I'm not anything close to being super critical, or an expert, I just like I could very rarely get a shot I was super happy with. I much prefer the Tamron 28-75 2.8 I have now.

The above poster is pretty much on the mark from what I read.
I am just starting out in this field and have been doing LOTS of research on lenses this lens fell under the "budget" category. If I am paying $800 or more for a camera body, I am not going to use a "budget" type lens without have low expectations.
(This is just a newbies 2 cents worth.)

It's a great general lens. I used mine every day when I was working for the University newspaper. I still use it when I'm taking family snapshots and don't want to bring a bag of gear.
