View Full Version : 10D and RAW

You know I'd love to shoot raw for all our weddings. Certainly the 10D and 20D have quick enough processing that I would have no problems shooting RAW.

However, in all my practice shots RAW produces so much more noise than in camera JPEGS. I really needed to shoot RAW to correct the poor incandescent color casts but I'm not going to because I won't be able to get a decent 11 x 14 or 16 x 20 with the noise I'm seeing from RAW.

For the record I use photoshop CS with their raw converter (cause it's super fast).

Does any one else have this problem? Is there a solution which will allow me to shoot RAW and still produce excellent images?

Thanks much!

You could use a noise removal program after the conversion, such as NeatImage, as the Pro+ version has a PS plugin. You will probably have to do your own profiles though.

Also the PS CS RAW converter does have a certain level of noise control built in, it is under the'Detail' tab a slider labelled 'Color Noise Reduction'

The CS RAW converter built in noise reduction didn't cut it. I agree with you however about Neat Image.

Before I rule out using RAW altogether I'm going to purchase Neat Image and take it for a ride.

If you are going to just try it, download the free version, you will see if it works well enough to fork the $$$, the actual noise removal is no different, it is just missing features such as the PS plugin, batch processing and EXIF info retention.

You do get good improvements from using the defaults, however the best results are obtained by putting some extra time in, and using edge masks etc, takes longer, but you get sharper cleaner images. You will need the plugin for that!

PSCS Raw converter introduces noise that would not be seen using other converters in my experience,. especially with 10D files.

Cyberdynesystems,

That's interesting that you should say that. I'll try Canon's software and see if there is a difference.

I'll also try the free version of neat image to try it out.

Thanks,

Jay J - Have you tried the CS Raw converter noise sliders? I reckon on being able to tame 10D noise issues with those alone. Have you also tried the new Raw Converter RawShooter?

Is anyone noticing more noise when using Elements 3.0 to convert Canon raw files versus using the Canon raw convertor

My experience: Moved from Photoshop Raw to C1 for cleaner images. Further reduced noise (especially on formerly used D60 high ISO - I'm happier now with D20) using Noise Ninja. <http://www.picturecode.com>

C1 is a faster workflow converter: it converts in the background. Noise Ninja will batch process a folder of images: set & head off to lunch!

Keep in touch -

I use PSCS exclusively for RAW conversion and it worries me that people have noticed noise being introduced when converting (I have never compared).

As I have never updated PS (I do not know what version it is as I am not at home), does anyone know if the latest updates to the raw converter (think it is 2.4 now?) improve the situation on the 10D RAW conversion or does it just introduce compatability with other cameras?
