I just spent 2 weeks in San Francisco and have tons of pictures to go through. Except for a couple of days it was dreary and rainy so alot of the picture reflect that. I will share 5 with you here and more to come as I go through them. The first one is one of the nice days. The rest are not so nice.

Thanks Raj,

The weather was not exactly the most attractive for this kind of photography. Most of my pictures are very hazy and require quite a bit of manipulation to bring out the detail.

It's like that most of the time in SF (foggy, overcast), even in the summer. We can tell who the tourists are in San Francisco because they're wearing bermuda shorts. ;) SF residents think that 80ºF is a heatwave.

Good job on the photos under the conditions.

At least with the photos you've posted thus far, you've done very well. I lived in the Bay Area for 30 years, and there seem to have been far more gloomy days in San Francisco than sunny. In spite of that, it is one of the most photogenic cities in the world.

I look forward to seeing more of them. I could use a good dose of homesickness.

You have made some really good images, especially under the SF circumstances. What is so rare as a nice day in SF? Last visit there, I took cloudy/foggy/dull shots of the GG bridge every day for a week, then suddenly it was sunny. What a difference.

Thanks guys. The sad part is that the first week I was there on business it was beautiful weather and I did not even have my camera with me. The moment my vacation started and my wife arrived with my equipment the weather went to crap.

Were you on, I think it's pier 59, ... Man I was there like 4 years ago also , shot some film .. I loved it ..

Great shots. I was so facinated with alkatraz when I was there. You don't get to see these landmarks on the east cost, but you always hear about them ..

I used a 70-210 with a 1.5x extender when I was there canon eos film body ... had a blast .. great images..

More than just a bit. I do love that city.

BTW, the next time you go there, make sure you wear that hat. You'll fit right in.

I'm curious, though...how does San Francisco rate with you compared to other US cities you've visited?

I have visited the US often but only as a visitor so I know that I will not have experienced the full flavor of any of the places I have visited, but that being said:-

San Francisco. Fabulous fun city, I enjoyed it more when I visited in the mid 70’s but I was a lot younger then (and it felt less hilly) Its big plus points are:-

1. It is in Northern California which is wonderful (I have not spent any time in SoCal but I am sure that is fabulous too)
2. The city is just so interesting and has all the great features of a port city, like Cape Town, Vancouver and Sidney.
3. Mammas on Washington Square… the best breakfast in the world.

Other cities
New York was just a little too busy and claustrophobic.
Seattle I loved
Denver simply stunning
Boston is very pretty and felt like home
Las Vegas, is great fun but cost me far too much
Bakersfield is possibly the most boring place I have visited outside of the UK
Orlando (on business, not choice) I hated
But my favorite City in the US and I am not sure why other than the people, the food, the architecture and the fact that I always just have a real good time is…… Chicago

Outside of the cities, Alaska, Montana, Oregon, Arizona, Texas. You live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world…..

Sorry for the minor hijack…. I love your pics, despite the weather your picture of Golden Gate is fab, you have hidden the work going on under the arch and managed to get “The Flag” from the fort in the bottom of the frame.

Love the gull in the last picture and the steel grey sea surrounding Alcatraz takes it out of the “postcard” and shows just what an inhospitable place it was.

No problem Neil. Thanks for the compliments. I have not had a chance to work on any of my other pictures because I have had to work on the paid ones all week. I am looking forward to going through my pictures of Elephant Seals that I took in Point Reyes National Park. Really cool animals.
