What type of lens should I use?

I currently have a digital rebel with a 18-55mm and a 55-200mm USM lens. I am looking to do some portrait work with my camera. Can I use one of these or should I be using a prime? If so, what size prime. I am a beginner!

Also, how important is the uv, pl, nd filter kit to have? is it worth it to buy 2 of the kits since I have a 52mm and a 58mm threads?
