I recently bought the Caon 70-200 F2.8 IS USM lens and have shot a lot of sports lately but don't get the blurred background. Shooting info says it is at 2.8.
Any thoughts on what is going on? This is on an XTI body....
TIA

Have you got some examples? This can happen for a number of reasons. What sports are you shooting and from where?

You probably need to take a look at a depth of field chart.
For example when shooting with at 200mm on a football field and trying to get images on the other side of the field the sidelines will not be that blurred.
Depth of field is also related to focal length, distance from subject, and the distance the background is from subject. Fill the frame as much as possible!

Yep, I often shoot football end-zone action with a 70-200 f.2.8 wide open and almost always get a relatively HUGE depth of field cuz I'm frequently at 70-90mm. Most of the players standing around in the background are in focus, as are the ball guys, the refs, the "sideline spectators", et al.

A monopod on a 70-200?
I'm guessing he has never handled LONG L glass
Maybe once he has handled a 300/2.8 | 400/2.8 or 500/4 | 600/4 for a few hours, he will think that the 70-200 is a lightweight
