It's been a while since I've posted anything - though I've been lurking from time to time.

Lately it's been Friday night under the lights. Can't bring myself to use flash, so after a couple rounds I've settled on ISO 3200, 1/320. Pushing it with the shutter speed, I know, and I do lose some images to excessive motion blur, but I prefer a decently exposed image than an underexposed one that gets uber hammered by noise. And, yes, Noise Ninja is my friend.

Canon Mk II + 300 2.8 L IS.

C&C welcomed.

1. Skyline HS QB Jake Heaps. #1 recruit in the nation Class of '10. Team is ranked in the Top 10 nationally. Kid has the poise to elude would-be tacklers and hit his WR 60 yards down field in stride.

2. Rather dark on this side of the field. Quickly changed camera position from landscape to portrait when I saw the ball in the air. Now thinking I should left it as-is. #11 picked it.

3. Student body right.

4. Either brass band instruments in the background or sparks coming out of his butt.

5. Pancaked in the trenches.

6. Feeble attempt at panning - f/5, 1/80, ISO 1600

7. Other side of the field probably would've been a better vantage point. Nonetheless, like how the holder is checking out #18 leaping from around the edge.

8 - Here's to next baseball season! My soon-to-be nephew - or is that nephew in-law?

Very nice action Ronnie. A little noisy, but I know how 3200 is on the MII. Every time I see 3200 from a MIII makes me want to submit an order to B&H :).

Really like #4 and the baseball shot.

Exclaimer: The comments made are my personal take on the images and are in no way a reflection on the photographer and or equipment. Comments made are not personal attacks in any way, shape or form. I shoot sport on a professional level and know what magazines, papers and websites look for.

#1: Even though this is a good shot, I do not really think it compares to all the others that you have taken, in my opinion I would not post it, Sport you want to see action, faces and the ball, there is little to no action in this shot. Also there is to much grain in this shot which would also have me (personally) removing it if I had taken it.

#2: Good action sequence, I would crop in a bit, don't need all of that for ground as were going to be looking at the players not the grass.

#3: This one is my pick of all your photos you have posted, great action, you can see the expression of his face as he is deciding when and were to release the ball, .. the ball even though is in his hands, is in the photo ..I also like the 3 on 2 play and the middle player looks to be heading for that lone opposing player.

#4: Nice shot, but in my opinion like number one there is not much action here, these shots would be better if a player is just about to tackle and or he is throwing the ball, you want the image to speak a 1000 words, not 10.

#5: Unless this resulted in an injury and you did not get the kill shot I would use this, however all I am seeing is the back of the players, the other "leg" on the left is annoying also

#6: Definitely a winner here, great use of motion blur, this speaks action, even though the you can only see a hint of the ball with the middle player you can see or anticipate what may happen.

#7: This shot would have been better in my opinion if you had caught the players foot on the ball, always another good thing to capture in foot "ball" related sports. Otherwise not a bad image specially with the player anticipation just off center

#8: I kinda got lost here, less we switched channels, Its a nice base ball shot however I would have left it for a different thread, by the way the ball looks weird in the fold of the leg, would use a shot were the ball is closer to the mitt.

Ronnie - Get over it and use a flash! I would much rather be a ISO 800 instead of 3200.

Love the last shot, I'm missing baseball already and can't wait to head to Arizona for Spring Training.

I agree with you on that Chris. I've gone to the dark side (or light side) and use flash all the time now for HS football. Even on the well lite fields.

I agree. I think flash will only improve these as you will be at lower ISO.

Gotcha. Thanks for ripping them up.

It's a simple sportrait and you see this type of shot in all sorts of media. In my opinion, not every shot needs to be peak action.

#2: Good action sequence, I would crop in a bit, don't need all of that for ground as were going to be looking at the players not the grass.

I either crop to a 4x6 or 5x7 aspect ratio and some times it is not perfect.

#3: This one is my pick of all your photos you have posted, great action, you can see the expression of his face as he is deciding when and were to release the ball, .. the ball even though is in his hands, is in the photo ..I also like the 3 on 2 play and the middle player looks to be heading for that lone opposing player.

The guy with the ball is the running back and carrying the ball up field. While he can throw the ball from behind the line of scrimmage, he has no intention of doing that here.

#4: Nice shot, but in my opinion like number one there is not much action here, these shots would be better if a player is just about to tackle and or he is throwing the ball, you want the image to speak a 1000 words, not 10.

Again, simple sportrait.

#5: Unless this resulted in an injury and you did not get the kill shot I would use this, however all I am seeing is the back of the players, the other "leg" on the left is annoying also

Fair enough. Just mixing it up.

#6: Definitely a winner here, great use of motion blur, this speaks action, even though the you can only see a hint of the ball with the middle player you can see or anticipate what may happen.

Thanks.

#7: This shot would have been better in my opinion if you had caught the players foot on the ball, always another good thing to capture in foot "ball" related sports. Otherwise not a bad image specially with the player anticipation just off center

Foot on ball just like bat on ball in baseball is overrated in my opinion.

#8: I kinda got lost here, less we switched channels, Its a nice base ball shot however I would have left it for a different thread, by the way the ball looks weird in the fold of the leg, would use a shot were the ball is closer to the mitt.

Like it reads, I am ready for baseball season already. While the ball is closer to his glove in the next shot of this sequence, the second baseman cut in front of him and interrupted the shot. The ball isn't in the sweet spot, but some times you get what you get.

I am afraid it will never happen, flash that is. I hear you about ST.

Nice shots. I also don't like using flash, though at the last couple of fields I've been tempted to. For nothing else, just because of the cycling lights. Seems I've been using ISO 6400 a lot lately.

Skyline HUH? Yea, they're a damn tough organization to beat...Our 8th grade played their underclass team two weeks ago and handed my Panthers our rear ends...
