loosen up the comp a bit, make sure theres no lurkers in the background or shun them forever for trying to kill a shot.

Ouch, they aren't that bad at all. Composition could use work but exposure is pretty good.

thanks, my first time out and nothing was really set up, I just wanted to see if I could actually capture anything worthwhile. I'm actually going to set up a planned shoot with this kid sometime in the next few weeks and i'll be renting a uwa for that.

No, think about composition, what's in the background, how close you are to the subject, whether it's a trick-in-the-sky photo, will this angle suck, are there any other angles that will better capture the story of the trick my friend is doing, how am i going to time it, etc.

For your first shot, try not to shoot the skaters backside. Butt shots aren't that attractive. Show the entire obstacle that he's skating. Yeah, he's doing a kickflip off a ledge, but how big is the ledge? (example: a kickflip down 3 stairs compared to a kickflip down 13 stairs - if all you show is the skater taking off at the top of the stairs, it doesn't matter how big the set is if you can't see it - it might as well be a curb)
Second shot, you're angle on the skater is better, but not on the ledge. Shooting from the top looking down makes the ledge look really small. You want to exploit the size of that thing. Shoot from the bottom looking up, or at least at eye level to the top of the ledge.
For both of them, you did alright considering the harsh light. A couple things you might want to look into are flashes that can be used off camera, and a wide angle lens. Sure, the wide angle isn't necessary for good skate photos, but it definitely helps with getting closer to the action and "exploiting" the obstacle.

Good try but as the others have said, no butt shots. You may try laying down on the ground and looking up or jump down into a bowl or something.

before you buy a super-wide angle lens get used to shooting with just a standard long lens

Exactly. You don't even need to post topics, just waste 1 day, sit on your computer, and read a bunch of random topics.

Yeah, I got flamed to hell for my username. They think that just because mom and dad bought them a hassy, they are god.
Not bad shots. Get lower, and use a flash. Timing a bit later on 2 would be good. Just as he is grabing the board. With 1, I would just shoot form the other side.
Keep shooting!

Not to stray from this topic but...
I hate the kids who think that its ok to mooch 8000 dollars off their parents for a Hassy and a 30mm, then criticize the people who can't afford anything more than a D40.
I'm only 16 and have to pay for everything out of my pocket, I wish I could be rich too.
BACK ON TOPIC.
