Took wife ,Son and Grand kids to the coast on Sat.
Nice day ,not too much wind. Fairly warm.
Had a great lunch, got some Salt Water Taffy (fresh).
Now the bad part, Was taking pics with my 6 week old XTI ,,,yep caught by one of them damn sneaker waves,, yep me and the XTI took a swim in the ocean.
I was faced with a choice ,,save my self and new camera OR catch my grand daughter as she was rolling along with the waves.
Of course grabbed my grand daughter, wave hit us both knocked around.
There were 4 or 5 others there that also got surprised by this wave ,it came on so fast that was no time to out run it.
We all made it ok THANK GOD.:)
But the XTI was not so lucky, as it was on when we got hit.
I turned it off but the green light stayed on ,took out the battery. Talked to a couple of camera buddies ,,looks like she is toast.
Will call Canon to get estimate to fix.

Oh no! I am glad to hear you made it out with everyone else. Those sneaker waves can be pretty scary.

Sorry to hear that. A non-weather sealed camera (even a weather sealed one) fully submerged in salt water at the beach is unlikely to ever be the same, at any cost. I doubt they'd be able to give you much of an estimate on the phone, and I'm afraid it wouldn't be worth the shipping costs to send it to a service center for an estimate.
I think it's time to go shopping again.
Glad to hear everyone escaped safely. We'd thought about some clam digging on the Washington coast, but all the openings have been at night, and with kids it's just not safe.

Sorry to hear what happen. If you pay with credit card like American Express, they might have some protection up to 90 days.

:( That's very sad, but I'm glad that you and your granddaughter are ok. Could this be an "excuse" to move to a xxD? ;)

A granddaughter is much more precious than any camera. You made the right choice.
However, a camera immersed in the ocean is not worth repairing. Neither is its lens. It's time to buy new ones, regardless of how new the "old" ones were.
Sad, but stuff happens. C'est la vie!

Yep. I'm afraid it's replacement time. They won't want to repair it, because there's bound to be something they miss or that goes after they return it and you'll be upset. Plus the cost of the pats and installing them manually is much more than the cost of building a new camera on an automated assembly line.

Thanks.
I went ahead and sent it to Canon to see if they can do anything with it.
for 13.20 shipping it is worth it to see if by some chance in hell they can or will repair it.
Camara is an item, life is not.

We were at Beverly Beach, sometime around 3 0r 4 o'clock i think.
We talked to one of our day care mothers ,she also said her bunch got hit with it also. All was safe but lost a lot of shoes and stuff.
I wonder if there was an earth quake around that time. It seemed pretty calm at the time and the water seemed like it was a long way out.

Wow, I'm glad everyone is ok. Sorry about the camera.
This reminds me of the day I took these shots (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=256759) just a few miles south of where you were. (this was on the south Jetty in Newport)

Remove the electronics and toss it in your aquarium for a decoration.
