hi folks,

i'm about to be shooting freelance for a fashion show and have received the following email back from the Communication Coordinator after my initial email enquiring about obtaining correct accreditation to shoot the event:

Hi Benon,

Thank you for email. Your photography enquiry was forwarded to me as the Communications Coordinator for the event.

We are not accrediting photographers for this year's event, as we would like to make access to the event by media, as easy as we possibly can. We would, however, be interested to obtain a disc of your images, with a view to perhaps purchasing some of them at a discounted rate, for use to promote the event in future years in lieu of accreditation?

There will be a media rise positioned for you to take advantage of on the night too. You will not, however, be able to have access to the VIP Seating area where our sponsors and other guests will be located, as we have already engaged an official photographer to cover our needs there. Otherwise feel free to capture the event as much as you can and we look forward to seeing the end results.

Would you be open to that and could you please indicate what that rate might be in advance.

Thanks again for your interest.

Kind regards

_____________

My question to fellow POTN is how much should i charge for individual images?

Also I am thinking I should be providing a disc of low res versions for initial viewing? Or should I provide the full res, but watermarked?

BJWOK-

Can you clarify-charge who? If there already is an official photographer that they are paying, then it is very unlikley that they would also pay for your images. I would only provide them with web res pictures for proofs. For the purpose of charging models or guests, how would they even know that you were there?

What sort of fashion show is it? Are you talking big name brands or some local labels exhibiting? That'll make a fair bit of difference...

Pricing would depend on usage for me.

For proofs, I'd supply low res watermarked.

The event producers are clearly telling you that you are not worth hiring you outright. However, they are willing to have you work for free or the very small chance that they might pay you-is that really worth it to you???

They are also saying they are not accrediting photographers so that they can make it easier for the media...then they say they may purchase some of your shots at a discount, in lieu of accredidation. If they are not accrediting, then there is no "in lieu of". Sounds like they are trying to take advantage of you.

as far as portfolio building, experience gaining, enjoyment sustained - yes it is worth it i think ;)
