Is there a comparison of the dynamic range difference in cameras? I am particularly looking for a comparison of the 40D and XTi. I wanted to see how much of a difference there is :)

I think dpreview has some dynamic range comparisons in some of their camera reviews... perhaps check it out.

The info is out there, I’ll poke around, but DR is pretty constant across all digital cameras and varies very little from camera to camera. For the XTi and the 40D it’s probably going to be identical as it’s pretty much the same chip as well.

Dpreview has the data for both cameras.

As I thought, they are the same

I would expect more dynamic range from a 14 bit camera as opposed to a 12 bit camera.

It's the other way around. Higher bit depth does not cause greater DR, only breaks it up into smaller pieces. However, if you can produce greater DR in the hardware, either by raising the well saturation point (highlight range) or reducing noise (shadow range) you may need more bits so that the shadows can be written without banding.

Than how do you explain it Elie?

Less noise. The bottom limit is the point where noise obscures shadow detail. (This is, unfortunately, a somewhat subjective determination, which is why you see so many different numbers for DR.) Reduce noise and you lower the DR floor.
