I posted a different thread with my 4 kiddos with pumpkins, the same day I pushed their limits and had them try on their costumes and did another photo shoot with them LOL! Luckily since day 1 they are used to crazy camera mommy in their face, so some of them ham it up pretty well, I'm betting you can pick out which ones those are
Anyway as posted in my previous thread, I just got my 30D & lens, the weekend, these shots were my first with it, LOVING it, I know I need to get better with it, had a blast with it, I want to get the best I can with it in a short peroid of time so that I can do my childrens 5 year photos.

I added the EXIF info above each photo if that helps.

They do, perhaps due to my motion while taking the photos? I 'thought' I knew enough to set the AF point to their faces... but snapping away I could have missed it.
I had my camera set to AI Focus & Spot Metering while shooting, for these kinds of photos is this a good setting? Or no... I planned to play around again with different settings, as I do not know yet what setting are best yet for what type of situation.

With shooting the natural light you are limited, I would maybe next time shoot at ISO800 increase your shutter which would resolve the motion blur and then if needed use something like noise ninja to clean up the shot. But with the 40D i think you should be able to shoot at ISO 800 with no issues.

I second Michael's suggestion. I often shoot my son in the house at ISO 800-1000 without any real noise issues. The 40D is good up to about 1000 in my opinion. I am not afraid to use it up to 1600 though if that is what it takes to get the shot. I have found that shutter speed has to be pretty high for taking kid shots. My son does not seem to understand the concept of staying still for pictures, but then again, he is 17 months old.

It also appears that you might be having some front-focusing issues. Which focus point are you using and where? It seems like all the shots are focused in the middle of the body. I would suggest focusing on the nearest eye.

I just tried a few shots @ ISO 800  bleh... talk about grainy... I dont know WHY I refuse to use the flash... its a cloudy day & I even saw flurries outside... what the heck?
Anyway... tried ISO 800... I tried, making sure that I knew where the AF point was, the 1st to it was his eye, the last one his ear...
I dont know what noise ninja is... I have PS CS3 & I recently got Lightroom 2, I dont know anything about it yet, so its quite foriegn to me thus far.

Second set is a little better. I would say they are soft because of motion blur. I try to get my shutter up to around 1/200 . Keep up the good work and keep trying.

Lore,
Are you shooting RAW? They do look better.
What you should try is put the camera into Manual and set your ISO 800 and set the shutter so that the meter centered and see what shutter it gives you.

Personally, I'd go for something faster and drop the ISO. Dealing with noise is no fun.
The following is a sample; shot in full manual with a 50/1.4 (Not the nifty 50)
Highly reduced from original raw, was shot indoor w/o flash, ISO 100, handheld 1/40 at F5, then recovered 2.0 plus stops from the underexposed raw file. I stopped at F5 knowing I could recover the file in camera raw, otherwise I would have been in the no handheld zone..
While the original is in the 12meg range, RAW is the only way to go..

;) I know I should be attempting to try other settings, I experiment with those on the coffee cup on the table while watching TV ;) LOL
as for RAW, i talked about that somewhere, I dont know what thread, I'm waiting on my memory to get here  lol, thus I'm shooting on a 256 I had sitting around to get me experimenting for now, so for the time being its JPG only.
I did however bring myself to use the flash this evening ( I dont know what I have againt the flash... lol ) My mom made the kids some winter hats, so I was to snap some shots of them with the hats on & I figured... ok, I'll get snappy with the flash on... these shots were much sharper.
