So as some of you may have read in the Digital Camera EOS forum I was debating on getting either a new body or getting a new piece of glass for my Rebel XT, which the later being the case and the 24-105mm F/4L being the nice shiny new piece of glass.

So here are a couple of shots I took with it, please feel free to give me any hints on WB as I am still new if you think it looks off. I used lightroom on both images to adjust the WB of the raw image, aside of that the only other thing I did to the pictures was resize it to post here. There was a lot of shade and some clouds that day.

By the way this is my bueatiful 16 month old daughter, Rylee (my first child for me and the wifey) and with her Grammie!

First shot is at 85mm F/4.0 1/160, second at 60mm F/4.0 1/320.

She's so cute!! Both photos are a bit underexposed on my monitor but I'm at work right now and it may not be calibrated correctly. Great job and congrats on your new lens!! :)

Thanks for the compliment and the input! Let me know how they look on your monitor at home if you get a chance.

As and FYI... I did the WB correction on my laptop which is not calibrated, I am still learning about the whole calibration and color management stuff as well.

Great shots and congrats on the new glass. I would agree that they are both a bit underexposed but that's nothing a little PP can't handle.

Looking forward to seeing more shots.

White balance (on a calibrated monitor) looks fine.

Definitely underexposed. The very bright white house in the sunlight in the background fooled your meter. In a situation like that you can try to spot or centerweighted meter, manual meter, or chimp and adjust exposure compensation to make sure your subject is exposed appropriately. Sure, you'll blow (overexpose) the white walls of the house, but the house isn't the focus of the shot, so who cares.

The other option is to use more fill flash on your shaded subject to compensate for the very bright background.

I like the second more than the first, because I like the composition better. Centered in the frame with nothing of particular interest on either side to justify it isn't as interesting a shot to me. Put her on the left side of the frame and I think it becomes a much more interesting and dynamic shot.

Congrats on the new purchase. I love mine!

Yeah still learning more on exposure and having my trial and errors with it. I just finished reading Bryan Peterson's book on exposure and light.

Funny you say about the first being more uninteresting with her centered in the middle becuase when I was croping the picture to to adjust composition, I did just what you had said by putting her off to the left of it. It did look nice too.

I'll post more as I try some other stuff, there are some nice landscape opportunities where I live of some ponds and hills, etc. Hopefully with some more practice, not only will my candid pictures of my daughter and family come out nicer each time but so will the rest of the type I want to take.

Have fun with your new lens, these shots appear to be under exposed.
