Every once in awhile my 100-400L's Image Stabilization will start freaking out. The image will move back and forth in the viewfinder. This eventually leads to an error 1 displayed in the top display. I shut the camera down, remove then reattatch the lens and it seems to work okay. I read the manual and it suggests cleaning the lens contacts but does not say with what. What do you use to clean these contacts? I use an erasure on most other things electrical. Will that do the trick. Has anyone else experienced this with the 100-400L?

yep. hate to tell you my first copy of the 100-400 did this (with my 10D) right out of the box! exchanged it for another, and have not experience the problem since. Don't know about dirty contacts. maybe brand new it came with dirty contacts (it's possible I guess).
It's a very frustrating thing.
Good luck! can you exchange it?

I can't exchange it but I can probably get it repaired. I bought an extended warranty with it. Boy I'd hate to be without it because it is my favorite lens. :(

My 75-300 IS lens started doing the same thing recently. I never had a problem when using it on the A2E. I've been using it on my 10D and it started to act up in the same way. When I turn off the image stabilization it works fine but as soon as I turn it back on everything jumps around in the viewfinder when I release the shutter. Then the aperture indicates zero and it is basically dead until I either remove and replace the lens or remove and replace the battery. I first thought it was a lens problem but now I'm wondering if it may be an interface problem with the digital camera.

What are you shooting when this happened ?
Mine has done this twice in the year and a half I've owned it.. If you shoot towards the sun and the sun is shining in the lens at a certain angle, it can someimes cause this... The lens hood pretty well elimiates it.. (But it is bulky).
If you go to the fredmiranda.com link below and read DamianB's review, you can see he makes this comment as well...

Your 70-300, not a 100-400L right?

That's a problem then.. I'd send it in for repair or replacement...

Now that you mentioned it. It has only done it while shooting in bright lighting. I use the hood all the time. I just shot with it today all day at the zoo with no problems. The IS must have a gremlin in it. It don't like "bright light!" :D
