Tommy, she's a girl...umm 12 I think....sorry, I thought people knew about her because i talk about her a lot. She makes some really good video's with crap stuff.
I along with a few other people purchased her a flip video to help her on her way. And some software also!
Ok... that explains a lot... lol... sorry, I never caught those conversations. ;)

I knew what she wanted to do...I think it's been hard for a few of my closest friend to understand I'm at a different level.
I had one mom/friend ask me to take a shot of her son/daughter as they turned around and have it made into an 8x10 for the reception. I said I would if she asked the photographer shooting the wedding if it was ok.
WOW did she get upset with me.
I later found out said photographer would do it, but for 300 extra. She did not want to pay it and I was not willing to step over a professional line.

I'd be out there yelling "jump! jump! jump!"...
Saves on tax money... we wouldn't have to pay for his trial, all the appeals while he sits on death row, and the execution...
So I say, move yo a$$ to the front of the line, and jump... :D

This past year I encountered just that situation. There was a young teenage girl sitting on the fence above a RR overpass...45 feet up. She was threatening to jump. Her friends and the police were all trying to talk her down. I parked the car, grabbed my 30D w/the 17-55MM f/2.8 and framed her for the first shot. I took a long look at her face and I said "I can't do this." I put my camera away and left. Later on the police successfully talked her down and she was ok. I feel good about my decision.

I see both sides to the dilemma of taking pics during tragic times, but, had I been the mother or parent of that girl, I would appreciate those shots, no matter what the outcome.

My thought was as a Parent and a Grandparent I just could not see my kids being photographed in that situation...it was a hard decision...I am sure that I could have been published in the local papers with the shots I could have captured...I just could not do it. Elaine was in the car with me that day and she agreed.

I understand.
I remember the woman whose husband jumped from the twin towers. She saw a picture in a magazine and knew it was her husband because of the clothes he had on, she sought out the photographer and thanked him, because she saw her husbands end. Something many people did not get to see and it meant a lot to her for closure.
That photographer was attacked when he took those pictures and her comment alone made it worth his efforts.
I'm not disagreeing at all, just think it's two different views.

One of my first jobs as a photographer was working for the local newspaper and I was asked to get stills of any event that a reporter was sent out on. Well, one of those events was of a man that had taken his life. It was a high profile case because he was the local judge and everyone knew him. My job was to take the pictures of the event, something that I struggled with. It was a tough situation, made even more so because the police wanted pictures taken of the scene as well and their photographer was on another assignment...gotta love small towns.
I determined from that experience that I really enjoyed shooting sports, fashion, weddings and maternities a lot more!

Okay so it looks like rain/snow tomorrow for my bride.
So, I was thinking....if I took one light with me....Do you think I could get away with one light in a church to do some shots?
I've not seen the church it's catholic so that scares me!
But I'm thinking....put the light to my right, up above the head pointing down.
or I could put the light directly behind me...and shoot it up in the ceiling to add more light?
UGH, I dunno, I don't want to take a whole studio....

When I shoot more than one person, I try not to put the light too far to one side... you'll get shadows from the other people in the group... I'd opt for center placement. ;)

Hi there folks..... still recuperating ( and will for some time)
The majority of the residual arm/nerve trauma pain seems to be gone. It used to spike to a 7 at night and keep me awake for hours, but now it's a 3-4 I can deal with by picking the right chair and pillow combination. Wife yells if she catches me at the PC though, says it's bad for my neck. With this cement brace though, there's not a whole lot of movement. - Stu

Very little residual arm pain from the nerve damage anymore, so I am making real good progress... just a lousy headache this morn; probably withdrawal from the narcotic pain killers - evil things... they do their job, but really dope you up.
I completely agree Kristin, books are wonderful things. We have an excellent library system and my wife and I are always ordering our lates faves.

Hey there friends, I have a question about "Do-it-yourself-calendars." Have any of you ever done these using a comercial service?
What I have in mind is the 12-month kind, where you feature a single photo - typically 8x10 - which is at the top of the calendar, connected by the spiral binding to the actual calendar which occupies the full bottom page. I know there are several online services like Vista Print (Office Max) that have this service for a modest few. Just curious what experiences others have had. Thanks - stu

Kristin - Jim just focused my attention on your 85 1.8 shots. Those are really nice... love that shallow DOF. I bought that lens about 8 months ago and periodically play with it. For a non-L lens I feel it's quite superb. It does a fantastic job and can be had very economically.

Stu,
I went thru MPIX on one I made for a model. She was extremly happy with the outcome and so was I. But do some checking around to see if you can find any that are the glossy type. The one I got was the long kind. But did have single months. Hope this helps.

Robert,
Very nice photo. I think that it is wonderful that you honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to your Nation.
Remembrance Sunday is like our Memorial Day in May each year where we honor those Service Men and Women who gave their lives in defense of freedom.

How is everyone? tom, jim?
So today while sorting through this wedding, which at times was very emotional, at the time did not affect me at all, but while sorting I found myself become a bit taken by the emotion.
Plus for anyone who may need it for some strange reason our sync times on our cameras got off by about an hour..
If you go into lightroom, metadata and capture time, you can change the capture time of all those pics. in one click! Amazing! It sure saved me a butt load of work!

Thanks, it really isnt hard. Ive done it once before dropping from 250 to 180. I remember vividly what it takes, it just turns out I was eating to lose weight while lifting to gain muscle. It was counter-productive.
This time around Im wiser....kinda like Tom...but not wizard wise yet:D

It can be at times...but a strong will always prevails. We all need the all seeing eye Tom has. I eat to loose weight and lift to maintain what I have.

Jarad,
I dropped from 300+ to 230 about three years ago. I am 6'4" so my "insurance" weight is 220...I look like a scarecrow at that weight :) It takes a change in lifestyle. For me...I started walking and I cleaned out all the junk food in the house. I eat anything I want but I do so sensibly and in moderation.

yeah they dumbed everything down for the kids..
Baxter Stockman was a young black scientist who had invented some robots called Mousers to help control a rat problem in the city sewers, but he was using them to help him break into banks and do other crimes, but his Assistant April O'Neil found out and he sent the Mousers after her, she was saved by the TMNT. Baxter thought the Mousers had killed her and continued with his plans..
He held the city to ransom with the Mousers threatening to destroy some landmarks with them etc. April and the Turtles defeated him and off he went to Jail..
April now out of a Job decided to reopen her father's antique store 'Second Time Around' and the Turtles moved in with her.. but in a fight with Shredder and his band of Ninja (Foot Clan) the store is destroyed in a fire and they have to move to a Farm House which is owned by Casy Jones (vigilante)
the kids cartoon was so screwed up - i was pretty excited to see it coming to the TV, but after just 1 episode i was put off for life, they just messed so many things up! Pizza, cowabunga?? dude!? Initials on the belts and different coloured masks?please!

good afternoon everyone .. and man, going through all the pages ive missed was whoa .. lol
anyways .. as some of you know that i recently acquired the 17-40 f/4 and i want to share some of the reviews on this lens during a wedding i shot yesterday ..
the colors were great untouched and the UWA was definitely nice addition to my gear .. i dont know why i didnt have this lens till now .. it was great in tight spots and tight hallways and large groups, especially at this particular wedding, there was so much action on the dance floor, it really really served me well .. the F/4 was kinda weak, but thats what FEC on the flash was made for .. right? lol .. but for the price and build of this lens, its great for what its for and it made my job so much easier for me to get the whole mood of the wedding.
i'll post more as more info comes to me .. lol
