These are all listed as unimproved residential lots right now. The things you just mentioned are great points and I appreciate that. I will look into that.

I am happy with the covenants provided. There's even a possibility of having a 24x30' detached building that would match the house that would be my man cave.... STUDIO!!!! It cant be more than 720 square feet, blah blah blah... they just want it to match basically. The lot sizes are massive.... 7,250-16,000 square feet and they're all the same price.

There are other things to look into as well. Private road maintenance agreements, wells, easements, etc. (if applicable). Just do your homework, and you'll be fine. Jeff.

Evening all! Talking about housing and roads. You guys must be bored.

To the contrary, buying a first house is a very big deal. I remember our first house, and everything about the brief time we lived in it.

Lois worked for a real estate broker in King of Prussia, PA, and he came across a deal we couldn't pass up. It was an estate sale that included the house, the car, and all the furnishings (including all the former owner's personal effects). We got the whole enchilada for $7,500.00. Somehow, the car disappeared , but we didnt really care. It was an old, beat up 1957 Ford, and we already had a better car.

We still have a couple pieces of the furniture.

First house is a big deal. Something I learned since we're in our third home, is to drive over to the house many different times of the day to see what the neighbors are like, if it's got a lot of traffic noise or dogs barking at night, if the sun shines into the house at a certain time, if rain flows right, if the street is dark or light after midnight, etc. And to drive your biggest car to the new place to see if it actually fits the garage. My minivan does not fit into the garage well, only 2 inches on each side smaller. Bummer.

It's Fridayyyyyy!!!!! Good morning everyone!

Wow Tom - that's quite a neat story. Did the couple come back and steal the car then?

Suzie - I have driven the area many times. I grew up nearby so I know what it's like - and it's a new subdivision. A whole lot of building is happening - I should post up some pics. The garage size would be around 19x20 - 21x21. I dont know that we will put both vehicles in it though. It seems to be a safe neighborhood, and we are really excited about the new school.

I'm just waiting to hear back from the builder with floor plans that we agree on - and then it's off to the committee of the area to be approved. From there, a contract will be drawn out and signed - and we just wait from there.

Figure on putting them both inside - it'll make snow clearance easier, as well as starting the car on a cold morning.

SoaringUSAEagle
2nd of October 2009 (Fri), 09:11
Very true Jon - and I dont really plan on having anything in the garage for storing anyway (nothing major at least - maybe a freezer) so there should be plenty of room.

SuzyView
2nd of October 2009 (Fri), 09:37
Our garage is full due to finishing the basement. But we don't have too much snow here, just ice. That's worse. My minivan has never been in the garage. But my husband is planning to clean out the garage this winter if he buys his new car.

Schools are the number one consideration for us. With 4 sons, it was the deal maker or breaker. We've always been very lucky this way. Our sons have done well.

No, I think her lawyer got it. She was dead, and her survivors were young children. It disappeared from the list of the assets of her estate.

Jeff remember to think about construction too, we were only the 3rd family to move into our new neighborhood, which means dealing with tons of construction workers and vehicles all the time, sometimes in your driveway! It has been worth it, but definitely annoying!

SoaringUSAEagle
2nd of October 2009 (Fri), 11:59
The construction, dirt, dust, whatever does not bother me because I know it will not last forever. I know it's a consideration but I have to think of resale value and whatnot down the road too...

I posted elsewhere in the forum that I was relieved that Chicago didn't get the Olympics. They can't afford it, and the Feds would end up paying for it somehow. Besides, I think there is a stain on the U.S. for past dealings with the IOC, and I think we have a little more penance to do.

I was very happy to see it go to a South American country at long last, and Brazil is certainly one of the most vibrant and enthusiastic countries in the world (I'm told). They have some problems to work through, but they have 7 years to do it.

Very nice, Jim. We have that wedding this Friday. I'm very excited. I'm getting the gear ready. I shot that football game with friends on Friday. About 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter it started to rain and there was a interception and one of the players got knocked out unconscious. It took 30 minutes for the helicopter to come and it was late, so we left. In the 3rd overtime, the other team scored and the score was 17-14. We left as it was tied 7-7 in the 4th. Oh well.

He is walking around without a walker already and as long as he takes his pain pills regularly, is doing a lot better today. Friday night and Saturday were not good but improving since yesterday evening. And I fnally got some sleep!

I managed to run out to Aaron's soccer game yesterday...this shot made me laugh so hard :)

Went to scout my 24th October wedding venue and meet the couple this afternoon. This is Patrick and Sarah...my first "Goth" couple. She will be wearing a purple wedding gown and everyone else will be in black. A fun, loving couple and a fun challenge to photograph for me. The wedding will be at the Clark House...a turn of the century "square" farmhouse. Each side is the exact length of the others. Fairfax County has turned it into a wedding and event location.

Jim that's a cute couple and a very cool house! The wedding should be fun....you won't have to deal with a huge white dress in all your shots:D I shot one a few summers ago that wasn't exactly Goth but it was pretty different, bride wore yellow, groom wore brown and all the attendents wore different colors and styles actually it was more "hippy" or "60's" style. It was really fun and the colors were very pleasing for pictures.

Just out of curiosity....were you standing on something when you took that shot of the couple in front of the door? The angle says you were but by looking at the full pic of the house I am not seeing what you could have been standing on. I know you're tall but not That Tall!

Tonight is the first "in" meal we have had in weeks, lately things have been so busy for me & my husband that by the time we get to slow down & eat no one wants to cook, so it's grab a sandwich & get back to work. Or the glorious fast food, we have ate quite a few hamburgers & fries since school started. Since I didn't have to go take photos today(rained out), I cooked pork chops, twice mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, rolls & homemade chunky applesauce (compliments of my friend Jenny, WOW she makes the best applesauce ever!) I even baked a cake, Funfetti with lemon frosting:D

My husband came home from work and thought he was in the wrong house. LOL Especially since I even cleaned the kitchen & living room(the house was getting over run with dust bunnys)

It is a Fairfax County Personal Property tax on cars/trucks. I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna Van and a 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the tax was $660.08 this year :( Money goes to the County's General Fund.

We pay 3% of the sales price at time of purchase. Then we pay "personal property Tax" on a sliding scale for as long as you own the car. It is a fixed rate based on the "value" of your car. The newer the car the more you pay. I just dropped $660 for a 2004 and a 2008 Toyota. It is a much hated tax in Fairfax and many folks drive "clunkers" just to avoid this tax.

SuzyView

I paid under $400 for both of mine, since they are 4 years old. We were supposed to buy the new car, trading in one of the old ones, but my hubby is dragging his feet a little, so I forgot about the tax. But I heard it on the radio this morning, and just about freaked. I'm so glad I remembered where I put the receipts.

Good morning Tommy, Jim & Adam! How's everyone doing these days? Keeping busy?

Fairly busy here. The economy has definately slowed things down, I am at about half the seniors I was last year at this time. Still hoping things pick up, but not holding my breath. I still have plenty to keep me busy editing, and I am still behind but not as bad as usual. I have now traded the stress of too much work for the stress of not enough money.:D

Morning Kathy,

Things have slowed here as well....glad I do have a real job or I'd be in trouble. But things are good and no need to complain...like anyone would listen..LOL.

I just ordered my book from the competition...can't wait to get it.

I also am VERY glad I have a real job! We would be getting pretty hungry about now if I didn't!

What competition? Sorry, I have been so absent from here so much that I really don't know what's going on, I have missed a lot!

Things are still pretty busy for me, but they are slowing down for the season. This has actually been my busiest year ever, and I'm hoping to be able to quit my "real" job in a season or two.

That's great Tommy! Glad business is good for you!

I used to want to quit my real job, but NOT anymore:) My real job is the only relaxing time I seem to get:lol:. I like my real job because at 3:30 every day it goes away.... the photography is 24/7 most of the year.

Morning. I had 2 chocolate chip pumpkin cookies, which are very healthy and soy milk with some Nestle's Quik. So yummy. Waiting for the UPS man with my New Moon Movie book and then I'm off for a very busy day. I teach today and shoot an assembly at the elementary school. Talk about having too much to do.

How are you Kathy & Tommy, Adam & Tom & Jim & Mo and everyone here?

Hi Kathy and Adam,

Things have really picked up my day job! We got lots of fiscal year end new work. I am actually trying to hire two more folks :)

I'm getting swamped with "Pro Bono" photography work as well. I guess that is a sign of the times. I have a wedding Friday with Suzie and a wedding on the 24th. But I am loving it. My "day job" allows me to do my Pro Bono photography and with great gear.

Tommy,

Good Luck with that...you deserve a career that brings you joy and can pay the bills as well!

Just a cup of coffee for me this morning. We bought a single-cup coffee maker a couple months ago, and it's been kinda' fun experimenting with the various varieties of coffee available for it.

This morning, it was some kind of Breakfast Blend, and I'm enjoying it. I'm not sure what I'll eat, if anything. My brother was in town for the last couple days, and we ate a lot of meals in restaurants, so a little abstinence might not be a bad thing.

How's your brother doing, Jim?

Hello all!

I hope your having a great day!

Jeff, sorry to hear about Natalie being sick, and the house, I know you were both excited! I hope you find something that fits you guys perfectly!

My week did not start out well, but hopefully today will be better :)

It will. Have faith.

BTW, Brooke, my sister just moved back to Texas (from SLC), and misses it already. It sounds like they're going back next year for another prolonged stay. It must be a nice place to live.

Good Morning, Tom...

He is 100% back :) I appreciate you asking. He is coming to NOVA to visit in mid-November. We are going to the A&S Annex at Dulles AP for an all day Saturday photo op. Sunday I am taking him to NYC on the Acela...he has never ridden the "bullet" train...should be fun. We will link up with Jimmy & Nicole for a fun filled day tour of NYC...Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Promenade, "Top of the Rock", Central park, and then a really fine steak dinner :) Elaine passes...she will stay home and chase grandkids which she much prefers to walking around NYC all day with two crazy photographers!

Mmmm peanut butter and honey.... my favorite!!!

Well, the house is a no-go. The owner of the land/subdivision does not want a house to be built in that area for <$200,000. So be it... we're looking elsewhere. I am pretty much burnt out right now. I could care less about a house at this point in time.
Jeff,

Sorry to hear about the house. It just wasn't meant to be! You will find the right one...just keep looking :)

You guys are killing me talking about food. I’m on a 1100 calorie a day diet. Since the auto accident I've put on 40 pounds. Reconstruction you neck and back with cadaver bone tends to make someone stagnant. My goal is to pass a FAA flight physical by next Spring. Enough with the cookie talk.

Good for you....best nip it in the bud before it gets too overwhelming.

I ate a lot of junk the past 3 days and I have a high school reunion this coming weekend...... So it is 1000 calories a day for the rest of the week. I feel your pain :)

I have calamari for dinner tonight. :)

Hey, Jeff, that's how some companies work, to make it impossible for buyers to be happy. I don't know why. It's really silly because they lose so much business this way. You'd think they want your money.

I'm enjoying a sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich on whole wheat toast this morning with orange juice to wash it all down! All from the local deli down the street from the office.

Happy Hump Day everyone :)
