Like Geoff (GSH) I also spent all of last weekend at Croft Circuit for the annual rallycross superprix. Over 100 cars and some 90+ races over the weekend, meant that the action was thick and fast.
#1 I'll start with a word from our sponsors (always wanted to say that!) - Damian Cole demonstrating his Hyundai Accent WRC around the circuit.

#2 This little Citroen was essentially in a league of its own and dominated all of the races it ran in. The engine was quoted as putting out 200+ bhp which isn't bad! This shot was deliberately framed at point of capture like this, as I wanted to give an impression of just how far in front of the chasing pack the lead car was. I also wanted some spectators in the background. Most importantly though, just look at the light!

#3 Kris Meeke made an appearence in the RX150 Racing class that was supporting the main event. I have to say that I enjoyed the racing that these little buggies gave, and hope that they get bigger and bigger grids for next year.Kris blew everyone into the weeds by the way, including ex BRC champion Ollie O'Donovan!

#4 One of the Division 1 Supercars running wide into Mad Hatters!

#5 Saturday morning, struggling to stand upright in a gale force wind, no light and a lot of dust hanging in the air - not ideal photography conditions LOL!

#6 The use of offset focus points really helps nail composition at point of capture. Nothing too clever here, just simply using a bottom row focus point to the left of centre on my mk II and then waiting for the cars to be in the right place, means that I get what I wanted with no cropping, and can control the DoF to get all of the lead car pin sharp, and ensure I have my focus point on an area of high contrast.

#7 Keeping an eye on the opposition is always a good idea as you approach an ever tightening right hander!

#8 I always try to take pictures that tell a story, and believe that this is an example of one such photograph. Dave Bellerby (Lotus Exige) was third entering the chicane that leads onto the off road part of the circuit, and was battling hard with Jamie Lea and Jamie Bird. As you can see, by the time he got to me he was leading. Look at the front of his car, and in particular the orange paint on the bonnet. Now look in the background and you'll see two drivers having a frank exchange of views - guess who they are and what colour their cars are? No doubt opinions will differ as to who was to blame, but the result was a win for Bellerby and instant retirement for his two main rivals. Oh, and isn't the light just wonderful?

Hopefully you're still awake if you've made it this far! For those that are interested, all of the photographs were taken with a 1D mk II and a Sigma 500mm. There's a whole pile more from both days on my website (link in signature below).
As ever, any comments or feedback are most welcome.
Cheers,
Simon.
