I mean the parents were both full pits with papers but he is sort of on the large size for pits (he is 10mo and now about 68lbs) so who knows if something else is in his blood lines...

here is another shot of him from that same day...

Great photos. But I do not understand why people alter their pets. Why are you docking and croping ears and tails. Tails were docked on hearding dogs to protect them getting stomp and bite from cattle. So, there's a point, if you heard your dog.

Otherwise, great looking dogs you guys have.

Well as ironic as it is, dogs were bred to have floppy ears way back when, so most of the breeds now are the way they are because they were basically designed that way. However ear docking does limit the socialization of dogs b/c straight pointy ears is usually a dog in an alert/dominant state. Tail docking doesn't have any long term effects that would hurt a dog in any way other than socialization....dogs can't really tell if the tail is tucked if it's docked. However, I do have a JRT with a docked tail and I don't see anything wrong with it.

i submit that docking and cropping is largely done for the owner's ego.

owners should just go get a boob job or liposuction and just leave fido as the good lord made him -- (except for spay and neuter) -- is my vote :D.

I like bull terriers, the photos show their mischievous character nicely. I went to Battersea Dogs home last week, sad to say 70% of the dogs there are Staffs.
Tail docking is illegal in the UK now except for working service dogs; its suprising how quickly you get used to seeing Boxers and the like with tails.

not to mention recently here there has been some stupid boom of people getting these dogs for "show".

God didn't make fido, we did.

However, I feel it's all up to the owner and a humanely done altering of a dog is really no big deal.

Guys is there a difference between an american staffy (amstaff i think they are called) & a pit bull ? Are they 2 diff breeds ?

RobertZ
6th of September 2009 (Sun), 21:42
Absolutely. An Amstaff is an AKC recognized breed while a pitbull is a loose term to describe a bully breed dog but can be mixed, etc. A pit bull is also not the same as an American Pit Bull Terrier. Unfortunately, they are commonly all wrapped up in the same catogory of dog and the owners who abusively breed their dogs to be agressive or to fight end up causing problems for dogs that do not deserve the bad rap.

ahhh ok thank you for the explanation. There is a dog in my street which the owners said is an amstaff. Pitbulls are banned here but they look so much alike to the untrained. I jumped into their yard one day to rescue a huge lizard she was about to eat and a friends boxer flew up & bit into me where as the amstaff was just so excited to show me her lizard. Im not into dogs but that amstaff has a very soft friendly nature.

I love this thread! So many stunning dogs.

Whats the difference between a Staffordshire and a Pitbull? How closely related are they? I didn't realise there was so many staffies in the states. Lots of staffies in the Uk but unfortunately the rescue centres are over run with them. The vast majority of strays and dogs giving up are staffies.

*Edited to remove dead links*

ewancheyne there are three different breeds that are often interchanged or mistaken for one another the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff) and Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Stafford/Staffy/Staffy Bull). These three not only vary on size, build, and appearance their temperaments are also different and they are bred for different things. While some people consider the AmStaff and APBTs the same breed (UKC even allows dual registering and cross breeding) they have been bred to 2 different standards since the 30s with one or two times the AKC opened stud books and allowed selective crosses. To myself and to many others this and other factors puts them as separate breeds especially since they not only differ in size and weight but also structure, temperament, and personality.

The APBT (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c217/scratchindog/angusmusclepic3.jpg) is usually smaller and lighter built while the AmStaff (http://www.gaffkennels.net/2006MayHustler.jpg) is usually a thicker heavier dog. Now as I said earlier the UKC especially prefers the APBT name while taking more towards the look of the AmStaff and a most of the dogs winning there are mostly AmStaffs or AmStaff/APBT crosses that look like this (http://www.bluhavenapbts.com/images/faith%20scan.bmp). Seprate from those two is the Stafford/Staffy (http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/breedinformation/terrier/images/stbult.jpg).

Rosie my APBT girl. She was found a stray and taken in by a local rescue, where she waited almost two years for us to take her in. I wasn't sure about taking in a grown dog, but the first night in her new home she spent an hour in her dog bed before jumping in between my fiance and I and sleeping the rest of the night, and every night since.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t279/topgunz1/IMG_1429.jpg

One of my favorite memories with her was last year, the rescue group that saved her voted her to be Queen of their Mardis Gras parade, hundreds of dogs attend each year, its a major event. She was great for her public and a wonderful ambassador.

Depending on the blood line you will see differences. I would not consider this dog a APBT. The dog here is what is called an American bully. I think the bloodline consists of introducing a little of the english bulldog in order to get the massive head. I am sure Secret_Squirrel can give us better info.

Gotti is a PitBull line that breeds for that "on-steroids" look.....I prefer a gamier look, myself - but everyone has different tastes.

Here's my BFF - Camber. She's 9 months old, and is the best dog I have EVER owned. She hugs, she will lay at my feet when I am cooking in the kitchen (literally ON my feet), she will barge into the bathroom when I'm getting ready for work in the morning just so she can sit down and lean up against my legs. She is SUPER smart, totally mellow and I am so in love with this silly dog it hurts. Crappy pic - I know.....but until my 7D gets back from the shop, it's all I have! :)

The first is a pic of her at about 3 months, the last one is pretty current.

Gotti is an American Bully bloodline, they are NOT American Pit Bull Terriers (aka APBT's). I hate it when Am. Bully breeders call their dogs APBT's. I like the well done Bullies, but not the short, squatty, English Bulldog mixes.

Here's my crew:

New addition sleeping on my bed. She likes to take soft toys from the children's room and carry it around the house.

Name: Kiara

Kiara is a female given name and is pronounced /kiˈɑrə/ kee-AR-ə. Variants include Chiara (Italian), Ciara (Irish) as well as alterations such as Keearra, Keira, Kiarra, Kilkearya and Kierra. The name is derived from the Gaelic and means 'Little dark one' in the Irish version and 'brightness' in Italian.

Searched this whole thread hoping to see at least one GSD, but not a single one. I'm a proud new owner of a female German Shepherd named Lola. She's a little more than three months old. When I get a chance, I'll get some shots of her on here.

Edit: With more time to read the title and look at the pictures posted, I'm beginning to think that this thread is intended for "Bull" breeds rather breeds that are stereotypical "bullies". Seen a lot of pitBULLs, BULL terriors, BULL Mastiffs and American and English BULLdogs.
