These guys are giving me fits. They are high up in the trees and for me to get closer I must cross open ground, over deep snow . . . do you think they will stand for that? Nope, not a chance. Also they are quite high up and I see them in the morning or evening sky . . . the focus contrast just goes nuts . . . and me too. BUT I am getting closer and perhaps better, so save a spot on the keeper list for me, lol.

You need longer lenses.

I know how you feel.
I've been trying for a long time to get close to some Hen Harriers.
I use the 100-400 but still I can't get a decent shot.
How do you find the TC with the 100-400 ? I realise AF is out, but in general what are the images like ?

400 plus 1.4 TC = 560.
You better get the 600. :) :) :)

That's a nice shot. It's not easy to get the underside exposed right when you have the open sky as the backdrop. And you've got so much of the details showing. Good job.
BTW, you did remember to extend the lens all the way to 400, didn't you? <Just kidding! Sorry, I couldn't resist! >

LOL, It is LOCKED at 400mm, and the 1.4 TC is welded on to the lens. And I think with the 1.6 Cr*p Factor this setup is like . . . 896mm. (Sorry to use the Cr*p word.)
I have been shooting it hand held at 100 f/8, lol.
EDIT: I was just looking at the photo . . . and I think this is another 'Wrong' end of the bird shots for me.

Rod, despite the problems you faced, this is a great composition of that beautiful bird. Way to go.

RJ, maybe you can contact Hubbell about that long lens. I hear that they make some pretty big ones! LOL

Thank you Stan . . . hot tip there Zach. I have enough 'wrong' end of birds and the belly of them to last me. AND you see EVERYONE else getting within petting distance of the creatures. It just don't seem right . . .
A 400mm is like a chipping wedge around these parts. A man needs a long lens. Something that will fit into the rifle scabbard.
