As my D30 gets plenty of use it has invariably picked up along the way some minor scratches on the LCD screen. Has anybody else had this problem and if so is there any quick fix or is it a job for - dare i say it (CANNON)

I went the cheap route and put a piece of self-stick "laminating" plastic on mine. I DON'T need a to see a quality image on such a small screen, so that does the trick. When that one gets goobered up I cut another off the sheet.
Other posts on this subject have been to use a protector for the COLOR palm PDA. However in my neighborhood they go for ~$20.

I'm don't know of a way to repair the damage already done, but you can check on eBay for a LCD Protector. It may not be any better than the other choices already given; however, their cost on eBay range from $9.99 to $12.99 (Buy It Now Prices) When I checked this morning there were 8 of them listed.

Good luck

Yes, this is a very good product. I have one on my D30 and it works great. I used to have the Palm IIIc WriteRight LCD protector on my LCD but didn't like it because it wasn't clear enough to properly see the screen.
Bear in mind that the LCD products being sold on eBay can be purchased directly from the people who make these products for considerably less. They cost $6.00 a piece if you go to their website at www.daproducts.com.

Kharim,
very useful info! I noticed this topic as I too want some form of protection for my D60's LCD. I now have such a thing on order.

Ordered two cover screens from the website posted by K Hogan. Ordered on Friday they arrived on Wednesday from the USA to the UK. Brilliant service and the product is superb just what I was after. Every body with a D30 or a D60 should have one of these, considering I got two for 9 Dollars. Visit www.daproducts.com. Thanks for the replies !!!!!

Over the years I have played with several products to 'repair' scratched plastic that must be seen through.
A similar example is a badly scratched watch crystal and a scratched speedometer/guage face.
I have had fantastic results on the watch crystal with jeweler's rouge, a damp rag, and lots of polishing time. It may also work great on a scratched LCD since the "grit" is so fine.
The speedo face responds to Armor All Protectant. It doesn't repair the scratches but makes them almost invisible for a short time.
This may be preferable to Canon Repair.
Chris.

I received my 'da Oly Protector today, and attached it to my D60. It is an ideal LCD protector, and I can highly recommend it.

Hi there,
Reading this post gave me the envy to buy one !
That's what I did a few days ago. I'm now awating it.
By the way, can someone tell me how to fix it to the body ? Is it glued ? Is it possible to remove it easily ?
Thanks

The Oly Protector is attached to the D60's LCD display by two powerful, narrow adhesive strips, one down the left side and one down the right. Neither strip interferes in the least with the 'used' portion of the display, i.e. they don't get in the way of the display.
As for removing it, I haven't tried - and won't unless I have to - but I'm certain that, as the supplied instructions claim, the protector can be removed from the display be carefully loosening the adhesive.

this sounds like a great display cover, although since there are only 2 adhesive strips on the sides, does this mean that dust and grit can enter from the top and bottom and become trap in between the 2 surfaces?
this would seem to be a cause of some interior scrtaches later on during use.

I suppose it would be possible for dust or dirt to 'get under' the protector, although the adhesive strips are extremely thin, so any gaps between the LCD display and the protective cover are minute. I'm not worried about it myself, although admittedly I'm not expecting to be taking my D60 into any particularly dirty environments.

About dust being able to get in between the protector and the screen, yes, it is indeed possible and it happens. But I have not found this to be a problem because it is just as easily blown out with a small lens blower.
As for the dust scratching the actual surface of the screen, since the LCD cover is protecting the screen, there is no chance to rub the dust against the screen so I can't imagine this would happen. I've had the daOly protector on my D30 for over 6 months now and have not had any reason to change it (it's quite resistant to scratches) nor have I had any dust get in behind the protector that I couldn't blow out. I suppose if one is really worried about the dust issue, you could add a couple of adhesive strips to the top and bottom of the protector before installing it.
Hopefully that helps clear up that question somewhat.

Kharim

Over 6 months? Excellent; I am now totally confident that my new protector will do the job!

I think you'll be happy with it. In any case, for the price I think it's a steal!! I use my shirt or anything else available to wipe the protector clean (from nose rubs and what have you) on a regular basis. Often my camera is up against some other piece of equipment in my bag (light meter, remote timer, filter, etc.) which rubs up against the back of the camera and also I don't take care to shoot only in dust-free environments. I do alot of outdoor shooting in all kinds of environments. To this day, I don't have a single scratch on the LCD protector and there's no dust between the protector in the screen (any that has ever gotten in has been blown out).
Enjoy!!

THE FIX IS IN.
I don't bother with protectors since I found Novus II plastic polish. I got it from a plastics supplier. The #2 takes out most all typical scratches in no time. The #1 is super-fine grit..and have not used it. This stuff works for all plastic bezels..and I'm glad I don't have to worry anymore. Get some!

Hi, I have never owned a digital camera before and now that I have one (a powershot s40), the LCD screen scratched the very next day....how did you use the Novus II polish? I'm a little weary of doing it myself but if you could provide some info I'd like to remove the scratches myself..
Thank you!

Novus II usage is simple...it's a polish with very fine abrasive.
It is a cream colored liquid...simply polish it until the scratch is gone. Bingo!
Take care-

"regarding polishing the S40 LCD display"
Be careful before cleaning your S40 LCD display. "The S40's 1.8" LCD sits behind a protective plastic cover, unfortunately Canon haven't blessed it with the excellent anti-reflective coating seen on the G2's flip-out LCD. "

Good luck!

Caution re-stated:
Some plastic covers on Digicams and Videocams have and anti-reflective coating (purple'ish). DO NOT use a plastic polish on these. Also, if you have an LCD screen that is not protected in any way with a plastic shield (as most videocams), cleaning CAN be done on these with distilled water and a little dish soap (on a soft tissue)...then rinse with water only (be gentle!).

Yep, I'm going the cheap route aswell, the self laminating stuff does the trick good and proper, and none of this 'adhesive strip' nonsense.
Of course, I had kept the original that it came with, until I had to unsurprisingly send it for repair 2 months later, and good old Canon removed it and then stuck it back on with a load of dust under it.. nice one!
