Depth of field question

What should aperture range be to guarantee entire subject is in focus at a range of about 8 to 10 feet? Shooting with my 300D and Canon 50mm compact macro, I notice that at around f 6.1 the focus is a little soft once off the an AF point even for fairly small objects.

Get one with your 50mm charted.
