I would appreciate anyone giving me infor on what is the best by to move photos from either a CD-RW and back into my different programs or get a zip drive. I have had many different opinions - but I don't know if once on a CD-RW I will be able to retouch, etc. once I bring them back ? Help. Thanks for the information.

I would advise against a zip drive or any other form of magnetic media. The use of a CD-RW is fine for temporary backup, but for offline storage you should use a CD-R to store your original "negatives". In fact your photos are best stored on two CD-Rs, keep one by your computer and store one offsite (away from home). If your house burns down you still have your "negatives".

Any photo on a CD-R (or CD-RW) can easily be copied back to your computer for editing.

You can use a program such as ThumbsPlus ( www.cerious.com ) to produce digital contact sheets of the photos on your CDs, or even use ThumbsPlus or a program such as iMatch to maintain a catalogue of the photos on CD.

Always keep two copies on the most permanent media you can get. RW's are great for moving quantities of files between places, but they don'y have much permanence. Somewhere I have a URL for a site that addresses file permamnence to CD media. I'm sure you can find it too. Some CD"s last longer than others.

Get in the habit of keeping your original files in one spot and your working files in another. Then there will be no problem bringing your original back from the CD and doing some manipulation later.

As far as FINDING the right file in all those CD's, you'll have to come up with your own method.
