I just ordered from 17th Street Photo the Lumiquest ProMax 80/20 system. I'm excited.
I looked around to see what my options were... a simple Stofen diffuser or some huge Gary Fong apparatus. I hope I made the right choice.

The type of shooting that I do rarely requires a flash but when I do use one I have my ProMax on about 90% of the time. I looked at the others too but the ProMax seemed to be the most versatile.

For providing some different lighting options in a portable package you can easily stick in your camera bag, it's hard to beat the ProMax. I really like mine for situations where I can't use off-camera lighting easily. The combination with my Newton CR bracket works very well. Will you use it all the time? Probably not. Are there other alternatives? Sure. But for the price and portability, it's pretty awesome, I think.

That's how leaned. I figure that I could always have it in my bag just in case... I don't think I'd want to carry around the lightspheres "just in case."
I did find something called Demb's Flip-It. It looks cool... but I'm not sure if it's not much different than some homemade index cards that I can put together.

WOW - I ordered yesterday and I just received it. I didn't expect it to be done overnight. I checked standard shipping... this is awesome... just in time for Halloween

I'm focusing on my MPREs right now, so I won't be able to take photos for a week or so.

I bought one a long time ago and love it! IMO its the finest reflector you can get for a flash gun.

Here's some test pics I took using various options with the Lumiquest ProMax:
First up is the 580 directly:

Next is the 580 bounced off the ten foot or so ceiling:

Next is using the 80/20 on the 580:

I also use and love the promax system. I like the freedom of not having to worry about how far away the walls and ceiling are to bounce from. I haven't played with the gold and silver inserts yet.
Peace

My product of choice. It does however, work much better with a camera flip bracket.

i bought one a while back. I still keep it in the bag because it doesn't take up much room but i almost never use it anymore. it only comes out when regular old bouncing wont work for whatever reason. its better than direct flash sometimes but the shadows are still to harsh in my opinion.

I did take a couple of shots with it on Friday after I received it. I haven't done a comparison test and I probably won't ever get around to it. Here is a photo straight from the camera - only resized and saved for web.

I use an 80/20 for weddings & portraits. in pitch black wedding receptions, works great, better than a softbox.:p

Was there no ceiling to bounce from? I've tried the silver and gold but always go back to the white.

i just use the pass through method.

Pass through method doesn't work well if you don't have a good ceiling to bounce from.
Stetsonaw.... I'll bet you had dark backgrounds.
Try manual f4, 1/100, ISO 400. If you need more go to a higher ISO. As long as your exposure is good, you won't have too much noise. Experiment with your flash power.... Try +1 to start.
Don't rely on your lcd, watch the hisotgram. You want it close to the right side but not running up on the right side.
I like to shoot RAW. It will give you the most latitude.

The extendable white card - really a reflector - on the 580, followed by the Lumiquest 80/20.
just out of curiosity, whats everyone favorite diffuser?
