Not a great problem in the general scheme of things, and more out of curiosity than a request, but . . . . . .

Would it be possible to write some sort of instruction so that the forum doesn't turn certain sentence endings (ones typed in brackets that end with a number 8 ) into a 'cool' smiley?

This always happens when someone has been typing something about an f/2.8 or f/1.8 lens and places it in brackets!

(For example, my new f/2.8)

Which of course can be solved by adding a space at the time of typing (f/2.8 ), but could an exception rule be added to the forum to not apply the 'cool' smiley if the '8' is preceded by 'f/1. ' or 'f/2. '?

I've always found the f/2.8) smiley to be slightly annoying. You just need a judiciously placed space to prevent it. f/2.8 ) ;)

Easier solution - check "Disable smilies in text" when you're in the Advanced mode of posting.

The "bracket creating the unintentional smiley" syndrome got me a few times but I found it insignificant because typing that extra space is easy.

The problem that frustrates me more is the smileys being gone altogether when in edit mode and trying to guess which character combination translate to which smiley.

It looks as if the ways to deal with it are more awkward than adding the extra space!
