The Silver Fern Rally was a 9 day marathon car rally run around the South Island of New Zealand in mid October. It attracted over 50 cars and drivers from New Zealand, Australia, England, Scotland and Holland.

All photos were taken with a Canon 50D and either a 70-200 F2.8L or 24-105 F4 L lens.

I really like the third shot. the sign just adds to the photo. I like the country side as the back ground. Nicely done on all of them, it is just my favorite of the set.

An absolutely great set of action images, the BM exploding out of that dust cloud is very impressive. Love 'em all, well done. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v196/stubro2000/icon_thumright.gif

I agree with Swiss Toni, they really standout.
The red mk2 in 2 is a corker, and 3 with sign saying slippery road is a belter.
Great work,Kiwi rally fan.

Really nice series there, like 3,4 & 8 the best, shame about the ambulance in 4 though

An absolutely stunning set of images there, all tack-sharp and beautifully lit.

#3 is definitely one of my favourite rally shots of 2008; the colours are fantastic, the low angle, the pose of the car, the sign, the road leading away into the distance...it has absolutely everything.

I also like the reflection in the water in the last shot, although its a shame about the cables which do catch your eye a little. (I think that's being a little picky on my part though!)

Thanks for all the good comments. I really like #3 as well. I think it really sums up rallying, and I particularly like the way the car, sign and road leading off into the distance work together. I tried a few shots at this spot trying to get that image, and that is the one that worked best. As for the cables in photo #8, there was a fence across the stream between me and the car. I guess part of the problem is that I was using a 70-200 F2.8L lens; if I had been using a poorer quality lens, they may not have been so obvious! I think I might try photo-shopping them out one day.

If you hadn't been using the said 70-200 and 50d you would not of got images as good as these fabulous shots !
Definately some of the very best I have seen on here this year,so many great shots.

Thanks Pons, although I like to think the guy behind the camera contributed a bit as well!

Actually, I upgraded from the 20D, and although the 20D/70-200 combination could take some pretty good pictures, I think the 50D works better. It has a much better auto-focus - it feels faster and seems more accurate. I also love the bigger higher definition screen, which is pure luxury after the 20D!

I think you know what you are doing...........................:D

Did you shoot most of these single or multi shot ?,interested because the 50d has been getting some mixed reviews ,but the spec seems very good ,and image quality looks great.

All those photos were 'multi-shots', that is I used AF and AI Servo, and took a series of shots through the corner. I noticed I had the odd shot where the camera jumped out of focus (similar to the 1D Mk III issues I guess), but overall I felt my hit rate was higher than the 20D.

Actually, further to the above post, I think the BMW image was a single shot, but I'm sure the rest were multi-shot.
