Ok, I'm really wanting to start experimenting with off camera flash. I have heard of the cheap Cactus triggers on ebay but I can't seem to find one for a Promaster flash? Anyone have any suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated.

All you need for your Promaster flash and the cactus trigger is a shoe with a pc connection on it. Then you can connect pc from the shoe to the pc on the receiver. Then all will be well.

My Promaster 7500DX won't fire with a hotshoe adapter such as the one in post #2. Apparently it needs an E-TTL hotshoe (like on the camera) in order to work, even in manual mode.

But I believe the EDF model has a built-in slave sensor like the DX has. So just set it to slave mode and it should fire when it sees another flash. Generally it will work well indoors but not outdoors.

Thats the thing though, the only other flash I have is the pop up and I don't think that will work since it does it's preflash, setting the other flash off early.

Well then you're sort of screwed with the gear you've got.

With the pop-up flash, you can hit the * button to fire the pre-flash early, wait for the Promaster to recycle, then take your shot. It might work for experimentation but you'll want another flash of some sort if you're serious about off-camera flash.

I tried that exact same thing last night with my 7500edf.

the rapid sequence used to meter did not set off the promaster - but the shutter actuation did. If it matters, the room is 8x10 and is lit by a single 100w incandescent in the center of the ceiling with a simple milk glass shade. my operating distance between the camera and the flash was about 4 feet. the subject was at right angles to both at about 5 feet.

For what it is worth, I regularly use two 7500DX flashes with my 40D on camera flash to set them off.
