I have a model from MM asking about sending her the RAW files.... now what would be the best way to explain to her in an email that I don't send out RAWs to anyone...
hmmmm...
she is a good model, I just am not sure on this one! and don't want to upset/dissapoint her...
oh you can check the images here!
are any in desperate need of more editing????? :S

She probably wants to process some pictures herself. Why not give her a few raw files of herself to practice on? I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. She should however clearly state that processing was done by herself.....

Not that I really have any experience in this or anything, but what was the deal on taking the photos? Did she pay you? Was it TFP or TFCD? If you are worried that she is going to mess up the photos, then don't put your name on them. Put the ones you edit or are happy with on your port. Advise her that she can't credit you on the photo if you don't agree with her PP. She could always take a photo that you have done, whether its a RAW file or not and screw it up or change it up.
If you don't have any stipulations and/or a model release wasn't signed, I dont see a problem with it.

My MM ==> Large Life Photography (http://www.modelmayhem.com/largelifephotography)
Handing over RAW files??? I'm amazed someone would have the nerve to ask. The most I'll do is give them access to a processed JPG, depending on my relationship with the model.
Generally I've had good luck with models respecting my images and giving credit but there have been times where I had to remind them. I recently had a model take a good image and hand it over to some hack photoshop guy.
His 'retouching' was a joke. Thanks for reminding me, now I need to go compose an email...

I have many questions relative to Model Mayhem.
Why is the much required to USA users of the forum?
In general I would like to know how you found with this service, I guess good considering the many users.
Are the models available for shot with non-professional photograph?
Are the much photograph or much model on that site?
In general how much paid for the rent for a shooting in studio?
Jon Foster

MM is a free service so I'm sure that's the reason it's so popular. It also requires no real proof that you are a photographer, model or make-up artist etc. Having said that, you will find all kinds of people there. Some good to work with and some not so good to work with. I'm finding it to be a bit of a pain now and I've only had an account there for a few months.

hawk911
15th of June 2009 (Mon), 07:02
There's a few around here, but with the schedule I have, I'm only shooting 2x a month if that. It's frustrating at times, when they cancel, but I live with it. The local workshops are always over $100, and I have $0 in my budget to shoot. I don't want to rely on a workshop to shoot; hopefully my work and final product are good enough to get me models without them being "chained down", so to speak.

In this case you might try to convince some relative or some pretty friend.
Another option is to participate on some public events.
But clearly in this case, considering the crowds and the lack of possibility of movement, everything becomes much more difficult, but perhaps some portrait can pull it off.
Good luck. ;)

Hawk,
I'm an amateur and I get a fair number of no responses on Mayhem. However, three out of four models have shown up for TFCD sessions and theyw were pretty happy. I ask them to tag me saying they were happy with the shoot and that makes it easier to be taken more seriously by other models.
Just a thought that may help a bit.
Good luck.

Well I had my first shoot with models for TFP/TFCD the past 2 days.First one at least rang me up telling me she was running late but at least turned up (1 hour late).
Second turned up with her partner looking for a couple shoot, which I knew nothing about.
At least I got to practice my photography & the first model after seeing a few pictures wants to do another shoot in 2 weeks time doing japanese anime theme with 5 costumes.Had to google what that was lol.
Should be an interesting shoot.

I started out with some of my um... "Dancer" friends, I did quite a few TFCD sessions with them, the major advantage was, since at that time I didn't have much experience shooting models, those girls were already comfortable in front of the camera, and they know how to pose and move. Since they are friends, that put less pressure on me as well.

VERY common in the MM world. Having a model "Flake" is one of the risks of shooting models. Granted, there are ways to minimize it. :)

I find that calling a model using an old-fashioned telephone makes an appointment much more real than the exchange of some messages can make it to be. I always ask for their number and call, even if only to exchange some things....

Same here. I also set up a "Meet up" before hand to discuss the shoot at a Starbucks or something, if they flake out on that....theres not much hope, but at least I didn't spend a bunch of time setting up and prepping.

The same here - before I actually schedule a shoot with a model (other than a referral from another model I trust), I get a phone number, set up a pre-meeting, get a shoot commitment, followup with an e-mail recapping what we discussed (theme, costs, location, date, time, etc.) and then send a reminder e-mail at least a day in advance of the shoot. So far, it seems to be working.

Just an update to balance out.
After a long coldspell of "no responders" which really had me frosted, I've been in contact with 5 who did answer and may actually get 2-3 shoots out of the 5. Then again, I just sent real live proposed dates to them all, so we'll see how many disappear.
I also was so impressed by one model who doesn't do TFP that I hired her for a paid session. She responded to my TFCD offer with a very polite refusal (I have no problem with that). She's drop dead gorgeous and seems like a doll. It will cost me about the same as a group shoot but I'll have her all to myself and I think it will be well worth the expense to improve my portfolio. After all, we all spend money on this hobby.

I avoid MM like the plague, its only cool if you are an amateur and just need some random girl to stand in front of your camera. Having said that, I would offer some advice to some in here whos profiles I have looked at. If you are making it known you dont do trade and you want to be paid, you need to think about who you are marketing to.
Most of the profiles I see have half naked or flat out naked girls in very provocative poses shot in a very amateur style. Thats all fine and good if your target audience is 18-35 year old MALES. Most women will find that trashy and some downright degrading, they will never pay to be shot like that or they will flake on you if they do happen to book you. Try making your portfolio attractive to WOMEN, you know, the ones you want to pay your rates...

Let me second shooter's advice.
I'm a hobbyist doing TFP outdoor, natural light stuff right now. My port on MM is all non-nude. However, I wasn't doing well at getting models to shoot.
I asked a pro model with whom I've become friendly to make suggestions from my galleries. She was nice enough to say " Get rid of that" and "Put that one in". Since then my percentage of acceptances has at least doubled and three have actually even show up to shoot. That's after two solid months of either no responses or total flakes. Obviously, my model friend knows what other models want to see.
I find that we often aim our stuff at other photographers but that's not the target market. I want to work with models, not other photographers. I've redone my port with that in mind.

While there are plenty of GWCs on that site, you will also find very high end pros who are willing to share ideas and talk about the industry. On that front it's far more useful than this site.

The same could be said about most of the images in this forum.

Agree with you on the first part. However, MM really shouldn't be looked at as a revenue stream or you'll go broke. MM is a FANTASTIC site for networking and breaking into shooting models. It's up to the user to make it worthwhile.
Nearly all of the models on my web site are from MM. Many of them have gone on to sign with agencies. One recently walked a runway for Gucci and another flew out to meet with Ford modeling in NYC. I'm often approached by agency models for test shoots. Little more than a year ago I'd never shot a model.
If you are having difficulties finding quality models I suggest that rather than blame the site, look at your own portfolio and reassess your work.

Thanks but I have zero problems getting models. I have an agent who works all that out anyways, I hardly even deal with models until i show up to the set. Even then, they are pro models from agencies, not college kids and waitresses playing model on the weekend like the girls on MM. So its night and day difference from what you are used to I am sure. I am basing it on the fact that its basically a Myspace for amateur models and photographers. I can guarantee you that 99% of the quality pros on there are just on there to promote themselves, they dont actually book work with anyone from that site. Its not a bad idea since MM is the 1,120th raked site on the net for traffic, lots of people looking at it, they just dont work with anyone on it.

For the rest of us who don't start our careers shooting for Vogue or having access to agency models, MM is a fantastic resource. Mileage may vary.

Hmmm, let me see, just in these past 6 weeks I've shot with, I think, 8 models from Model Mayhem. The one no show I've had in that time was not from Model Mayhem.
As with any site, your results may differ, but you're making blanket statements and representing them as facts when in reality, it's merely your opinion.

While there are a ton of nobodys -- what else can you expect from a free site with all but no vetting-- there are also some from the top of the industry. In short, it is what you make of it. You just have to realize what it really is, and you then know how to work it.

Robert Alvarado has some of the best shots I've seen. His work is generally described with single word compositions. Wicked, killer, awesome, fantastic, amazing, incredible and speechless to list a few.

I think MM is interesting despite, unfortunately, is too USA centric so for European is more difficult use it for shoot.
In case of TFCD perhaps is better change the word difficult with almost impossible ...
However is possible learn and obtain many ideas simply see many good shoot.

mine. MM seems like it's for hobbyist and networking. There are pro models / photog / mUA but more hobbyist (wanna be models, hobbyist togs, starting out MUA) than pro. However, they are there to get experience and why not use them. Watch out for flakes!

I would disagree with that entirely. Sure there are alot of amateurs on there, but some of the best are there aswell.

We recently got sick of using Model Mayhem but kept the account just in case we might actually meet a model that is serious about doing some work. We wasted our time too many times booking shoots just to have some one cancel an hour or two before the shoot or have a family member (or pet) die the day before.

As far as I am concerned 99% of the girls there are not real models and I can't use them for any serious work. I did use MM to locate a model for one specific project last year and ended up wasting a huge amount of time before I found someone suitable. Model agencies exist with real models so that is my preferred route every time.

I don't know anyone who uses MM for serious commercial work, and anyone who expected to picked up for serious commercial work by being listed on MM is most likely dreaming.
What it is great for though is introducing creative and artistic people to each other so they can work together "collaborate" and create things.
It also gets used by models and and photographers to make a bit of money on the side, supporting people who like to model or take pictures as a hobby.

I shot a model on Sunday who was unable to sign up either.
They run an automated bit of software, if it detects anything even slightly different from the norm it will reject your attempt to join.
Check, then double check your following all of the directions exactly, and if that doesn't work you can try contacting a site admin through the MM website.
But there is not much we can do to help, POTN and MM have nothing to do with each other

I just got approved by the website. I registered on Monday (25th) and got approved Wednesday night (27th), so it shouldn't take long.
I'm glad my the pictures from my first photo shoot ever got me accepted, but I looked at some random profiles and they don't really have the highest standards so that doesn't mean much...lol
(There are many amazing profiles there though)
I just want to use the site to network and to improve my photography. Whether it's by using the 'models' for shoots or by looking at others as motivation/inspiration on what I want to become. Hell, I've only had my camera for a month and would probably consider myself as a GWC, hahaa.

You don't have to use 'models'. Just find someone (friend, family, random person, etc...) and just pose them in model type shots. Just browsing, I've seen people who are accepted through webcam type pics in their room...

I do MM just as a place to web-store my nudes. The age limits are good — I don't need my young daughters going to my general web sites and seeing adult stuff. Also, I've gotten a number of models to pose for trade there.

Lol, then there's tons of models who claim to be 'experienced' or very 'experienced' and expect to be paid while their portfolio is filled with pictures of themselves in their bedroom taken with a p&s or webcam. So far since I've joined, I've found the site can be a little bit entertaining though lol.

After being on there for several years it is becoming obvious to me which models are flakes and which ones are not. Though it can still be frustrating when some one does flake.

I have had pretty decent luck with MM so far. Shot with half-dozen models and no flakes. What I had aplenty is models disappearing after wanting to shoot, but never getting to setting up a date. I had a 50 message exchange with one never getting to a date/time, I got tired of that and dropped that conversation.

I am sure that this has been discussed before, but how many people schedule to meet up for coffee or something with a model before actually doing a shoot? I feel like I will be able to get better results if there isn't that whole "we just met and don't really know each other" awkwardness.

If they live within 30 miles of me, I require it. If not, no shoot.
I tell them that it's so we can meet and eliminate that awkwardness, as well as being able to swap ideas a bit better. I insist on meeting at somewhere with wifi (panera, starbucks, whatever) and I bring my laptop to browse examples and gain inspiration.
While that is a good part of the reason that I insist on meeting, the primary goal is: If they flake/cancel last minute/are obnoxiously late, they lose any and all chance at a shoot, and I make sure that all of my photography buddies, and their buddies, hear about it. Of course, I dont actually tell the model that beforehand, because then she would try harder to control the outcome. But I always tell them after the meetup (or if they flake). My theory, I'd rather them flake on coffee rather than flake when I had to take off work, or rent extra studio space, or borrow equipment, or travel to a location.
Just my 2 cents. Hope it serves as a guideline for other mayhem togs as well...

I just found this thread, after many frustrating experiences with MM (partly described here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=724819), too). Since there are too many pages, I started reading from p. 26 on.
I joined MM last summer when I started getting serious with my DSLR camera. I like pictures of beautiful women. As I'm a student, I took many pictures of students on campus and then I became active in contacting MM models. However, overall it not was successful.
As a freelance, I usually don't seek those models who look like very professional and ask for pay. They probably don't care any TF from me. But then, I have very few to choose from. And they are idiosyncratic. Many of them won't come unless I have very interesting ideas. But what is "interesting"? Who knows? And why amateur models, or just girls who don't expect to have a model career, are so picky?
Then there was a girl who appeared to be eager to shoot, having an appointment scheduled, only to dump you without a word right after she finds a better photographer.
Then there was a girl who scheduled an appointment with me. Everything went OK until suddenly she claimed to be sick a few days before that. And then she is sick forever.
Another girl was excited and asked me to call her. After the call, I sent an email to confirm. Then she suddenly replied the email, saying that she was not willing to pose nude. She knew from the very beginning that I was asking for swimsuit modeling. How ridiculous!
This week is the worst. A girl who posed a little with another model for me before said she's OK to have an outdoor photoshoot this Wednesday. We were still exchanging emails on Monday. But then she stood me up. All the calls were unanswered. And she didn't even care to reply the calls or email afterwards.
In the begginning of this week, I cast an availability call on MM, saying that I really want to take pictures this week as it's spring break and a model flaked on me. A model responded. Though she lived far away and I have to pay for her gas cost, I was still willing to do so because I had no one to shoot. So, we scheduled an outdoor photoshoot today. She was still exchanging emails to me yesterday. She asked me to call her this morning to confirm. But then she didn't answer the call this monring. I thought she might be travelling. I didn't know what to do. If I didn't show up but she did, she would be mad for travelling so much for nothing. If I show up but she didn't, I got annoyed once again. Being too kind, I chose to do the latter, and got disappointed. I am still hoping that she would get back to me giving me a reasonable explanation.
Another thing I don't understand is that so many models post sexy swimsuit or lingerie pictures in their portfolio but when I asked them to pose in swimsuit, they didn't reply at all. There was a time I asked a model who claimed to like shoes to pose with various shoes and boots, showing her sexy legs. And she didn't reply.
I do, though, have 3 successful shooting with MM models since last summer. But that seems to be too few. MM is full of silly and irresponsible people. Too bad, I have recently acquired so much camera and lighting gear only to find out that I am not going to use it very often. :(

I think this is a fairly good review of Model Mayhem and similar to my experiences of the years. Except I have found that grand parents and pets are prone to die the day before a shoot.
Over time you begin to know which ones will do this and which ones won't.

Joey, thank for the MM friend request and the response here! I am located in Bloomington IN. The city is so small that I probably can stop shooting models now, because I tried out most of them. (By "most of them" I don't count those who look very professional or very much into gory erotic type, which I don't want to do.)
Oh, there is one more frustrating thing about models. Serious models or not, I find that most models know nothing about posing. There are books on posing but they don't read them. Many of them think that they are just pretty or handsome and that's it. After 15 minutes they are standing in the studio not knowing what to do. I usually have to keep a lot of downloaded pictures from the internet and show them how other people pose.
Since I'm on campus, I have taken pictures for many students. Yet there is a difficulty. If I ask for just $2-3 per JPG file they would like to keep, it's already "too expensive" that they won't come. If I say it's free, there are many free-riders coming unprepared. And usually they won't be willing to let me try out what I would like to do.
Sometimes I get so frustrated that I really would like to sell away all my lighting equipment and only keep minimal camera gear.
