Your just to popular Jon :P

I only have 20 friends ... and 11 of those are photographers LOL

Sorry, I didn't mean for the comment to sound negative but I get requests from the craziest people. And not just one or two, I get tons of them. So many that I just don't look at them anymore.

That's great!

I now usually work with returning models. New ones are either expecting too much or flaking.

I've had decent luck with MM. Only bad one was a girl that got all Diva because she had a role in a second rate music video.

Unfortunately there aren't many models on there in my area. I've pretty much contacted them all and only have 3 or 4 that I have or will work with.

But if anyone cares to add me... http://www.modelmayhem.com/1644027

I've found that half the time a model doesn't show, it's because I didn't confirm twice. Yes, twice. Once a week before, once a day or two before.

on the surface, yes...

but take a look at his casting for this event... models typically don't show up for these type of things...

sure, they will say "i'm interested" but that means nothing in that wacky mm world :)

Hey everyone,

it could take anywhere between 1-4 weeks to get approved... and there really is no rhyme or reason as far as how long it will take... it's just a question of how many gatekeepers (all volunteers) happen to have time on their hands and are actually sitting down approving accounts...

wait another couple of weeks, at most... if you still get no answer, drop me a pm... i'll see if i can find out what's the hold up :)

Hey man...about your policy, No2. If No show/No call than you will not be scheduling with the model again, not "not working again". She didn't show up for the work! You can't "not work again" if the 1st time never happened... No?

If the model doesnt show or at least call me before the shoot and give me a good reason to why they are cancelling , then i won't reschedule with them. If someone has a valid excuse then I usually reschedule, and usually you can tell if its valid or not. I ve setup before , waited, waited and waited some more just to find out that the model went shopping or something crazy like that lol

A model didn't show up. Her reason is that she was pulled over by a cop and then spent a day in jail. Would you schedule another session with her?

johngalt_ny
25th of April 2011 (Mon), 09:18
I'd reschedule her just out of respect for creativity. :D

On the other hand, getting locked up for a V&T stop means there's probably something else going on. Drugs or a really bad temper come to mind.:-|

Color,

Impossible to know and I'm just speculating. I guess 100 mph in a 55 mph zone could get more than a ticket but other than that, it's a lot of paperwork for an officer to do for a speeder or running a stop sign.

Maybe you should ask her.

I think that, by the very fact that she was honest enough to tell me what's going on, she is probably not having other secretive thoughts. However, this kind of scares me. And, anyhow, she has not contacted me since then.

Depending on the state (and I'm only really familiar with NJ laws on this, so ymmv) it could be as stupid as an unpaid parking ticket.

Seriously, in NJ they'll suspend your license, registration, etc, etc over a $25 parking ticket - even if you didn't know about it. Sometimes its not even your car, as sad as that is.

Once I got a ticket for a brake light being out that wasn't a brake light...

I'd say reschedule, but have a backup plan in place. All these assumptions about drugs and tempers are just that - assumptions.

phantelope
29th of April 2011 (Fri), 17:06
Just ask her. Kind of like "wow, sorry to hear that, what happened and why did they lock you up?"
See what she says. Maybe she didn't have her ID on her or who knows what.

Maybe it wasn't her car and she could not provide papers for a while, I'd guess there are quite some reasons that can you get locked up temporarily.

I've done well on Mayhem but it's never 100%. Every model I've actually met has been terrific but I've had a fair number of wannabees and ozones.

Right now there are 8 models who are "dying' to work with me. If 3 turn into actual shoots, I'l consider myself a success.;)

Recently a model talked to me about a possible shoot. I'm flattered that someone likes my style and come for pictures. Since the date is months away, we've spent a lot of time brainstorming. I'm that kind of people who don't have many ideas and therefore I asked her for input. But eventually I got one, and I told her. Then she ended the communication!

Upon request, she told me that part of my suggestion is to ask her to show her legs more so that she would look taller. And she takes it as a big offense (which she denies as an offense) when I said that she is not tall. She said that being short (about 5 ft 2) is not a problem for getting into the modelling business. And she doesn't like working with people trying to make her look taller. She likes presenting herself naturally.

I have no problem with model being shorter than the "industry standard". After all, I'm not doing this professionally or taking pictures for magazines. And I don't care whether she successfully gets into the business. but I'm a bit baffled and annoyed by the way she reacted. She is definitely one of the most diligent and serious (would-be) models I've seen. But this kind of abrupt shutoff is, to me, overreacting and not helpful for her career.

Oh, yes, she also is not happy when I said, for this concept, she needs to shave the legs. She said it's something that anyone would do, and it's insulting, as if asking a photographer to wipe the lens. Taken independently, she might have a point, though it still doesn't hurt to ask, as a reminder. However, then I thought, if she is so concerned to show herself naturally before the camera, shouldn't I be concerned if she might not be willing to shave? And what about makeup? And what about high heels, which again are something to make her look taller than she is not?

In retrospect, LOL.

I think one of the reasons I don't use model mayhem is because too many models on there present themselves as overly conceited primadonnas. Nothing turns me off more as a photographer/producer than when a model has a page long list of "rules" of everything he/she won't do and expects the photographer to do .

My rule is you don't get to dictate the production until you actually put up the money and become the producer.

I have a term for those models. It's called... NEXT

Honestly, I have my share of flakes, ozones and divas BUT I have yet to actually meet a Mayhem model who I haven't liked. Once they get there, they're a lot of fun.

Ledrak, then where do you get models to shoot?

colormaniac
2nd of September 2011 (Fri), 14:11
Sometimes models having rules is still acceptable, as long as they don't behave like the following: They come you to asking for pictures. They sound as if they don't know what they want. But after time for contemplation, when eventually I make a suggestion (that does not involve anything extreme, like nudity or dangerous location), they leave, claiming that they don't like the idea. Come on, it's just a suggestion. Since you have no strong preference, and I haven't worked with you before, of course I'll have to throw out different ideas to see what we may do.

Ledrak
2nd of September 2011 (Fri), 15:00
Ledrak, then where do you get models to shoot?

Depends on what I'm shooting really. I do a lot of my own networking. I have connections with people who know and recommend a lot of models to me. I also meet a lot of models at industry events. Sometimes models I've worked with will introduce me to new models looking for work. Sometimes I'll go through an agent. Sometimes if a model has their own site, or their contact info on the web I'll reach them that way (just not through model mayhem ) On a rare occasion I'll even approach someone in the street if I think they'd be perfect to shoot.

I might give modelmayhem a go in the future, but everytime I go on there and see more model profiles with their lists of "rules" it just turns me off. I mean, who wants to work with someone who's already difficult before you even get them on set? I guess if you do like johngalt says and next right over the whole lot you might find a gem. But I just don't have the patience right now I guess.

I'm very happy with my models so far, maybe I was just lucky, but no flakes yet and several contacted me to work together.

I've been on there for years. My opinion? Great if you need test models or want to build your portfolio. My biggest complaint is its filled with girls who have barely modeled who either want everything free or command huge hourly rates with little to no experience. Use at your own risk!

So far, it has worked out rather well.

Only had one model flake-out and cancel without reason.

My models have not flaked, but none of them have been "models" in terms of what you see here, I guess you get what you pay for?

Took me 3 years to actually put up a profile! But i did it. Finally.

Now, any tips on networking this thing so i don't stay with 3 people for long ?

Well, I'll add that if somebody has consistent bad experiences, it's more than likely due something they are doing wrong in vetting, selecting or communicating.

Not directly related, but still an example, I've never had a single no-pay or collection in business since 1988. And that includes over 3000 small one day projects. Why? How? (because some other tree service or landscape company owners definitely have some collection issues) Short explanation, is that I don't do whatever it is that they are doing. I also don't like just taking anybody that will let me work for them, or who happens to call.

So at Model Mayem, whether you have consistent good interactions or not should boil-down to what you choose to do.

One thing I've found, is that it's better to send a private message to them, rather than, or in addition to comments under photos. Some models don't check the photo comments.

Also, set your settings for auto-notify to your email for whenever a model or other person there replies to you.

And, if you don't get a reply right away, go to your outbox, where you can find the message that was sent. You can see under your avatar in the message if it was read or unread. That may show whether they even got back to their messages yet. Sometimes I like to check a model's profile page to see whether they have logged-in or not. Many of the ones who stay on top of things, tend to log-in often.

If you have "some experience" then technically you are experienced. So I'd say it looks better to set the profile to "experienced" in that case.

Friend requests are very limited at my end. Most, just for models I worked with, or expect to work with. I don't see photographers helping each other a lot by exchanging friend status. But I think photographers can help each other by commenting on the model's own portfolio, for the pic of the known photographer. Builds confidence in some cases.

Just emailed a model to confirm our shoot tomorrow and got a response that she used her boyfriends laundry detergent and broke out in a crazy rash.

Definitely the first time I've heard that one...In her defense, I have shot with her numerous times in the past and all have been great professional experiences...so I do think it is a legitimate excuse...but just an amusing one.

I've just joined MM ... only recently even considered shooting beauty/fashion type stuff ...

Don't know if it'll work for me ... no-one on MM less than 100mi away! One of the drawbacks of living in the sticks.

Anyway, I'd like to make some contacts so drop by if you're up to it:

I don't know where you are in the valley, but Wikipedia says Golden is near the Columbia Valley listed for your location. I entered Golden, B.C., Canada and set a 100 mile radius, and it showed two models right in Golden. One logged in today, and the other a few weeks ago.

H8Monday, I am somewhat new to POTN and would like to join Models Mayhem. See that you are a member, so hoping you can answer a couple of questions.
How do I perpare my photos for MM. ie: sizing, protection of copywright, etc. I guess I am asking your workflow when putting photos on MM. I use Adobe CS4 to edit my photos. Open to any advise you will to offer. Thankfully, MVS Photography.

Another reason why I can't stand Model Mayhem. I was browsing again... I know, I keep thinking maybe I'm gonna give this thing a shot

Anyways, as I'm looking up potential models, I kid you not... I'm reading this chicks profile and she blatently states "I don't take bookings from this site". Are these girls f-ing serious? If you don't take bookings from the site then why are you on there? It never ceases to amaze me some of the moronic things models will write.

Probably not much worse than ads on TV saying "our food is the best" or a myriad of other stuff. Say, the insurance ads in the sterile white room, where one customer is a competing insurance company's agent. Maybe in MM it's because there's so many profiles coming our way in such a short span of time. One thing I like though, is watching some profiles morph over time and seeing which direction a model's head might be leaning.

Just make your images 72DPI with an average height of around 650 pixels and an average width for the horizontal images around 750 pixels and you'll be able to upload jpgs just fine

It's unfair to single out models. Photographers on MM will also often write stupid things. And it's not just MM, just look at some of the posts here on POTN.

Everyone has their own perspective and reasons for doing things. I try not to judge.

I'm not singling her out... I didn't even mention her name. It's not just her, it's a significant portion of models on that site that have their head gassed. If you go back and read the previous post I made in this thread, then you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm sure there are some photogs on their being moronic as well. But I'm not on the other side of the table trying to work as a model so I'm not really looking at other photog's profiles. But if it's your production and you're the one paying everyone... you sort of have a right to make whatever demands you want. When a model wants to call the shots AND get paid... I say hell no!! Not on my production.

I've also had nothing but good experiences. I had one complete flake this year. I tend to only shoot with girls who communicate decently and I always have a plan B. If they don't answer my call in the moring then I don't pack up my lights and do whatever it is I have for plan B. Could be hanging out with friends, shooting something else, watching a movie, whatever. If a model can't make it I just shrug and go on with life.

I've met dozens of really cool models and grown a lot as a new photographer this year because of MM.

Read there that you like the outdoors too. That's where I shoot.

Your 12/4 upload is one of my favorite grasses, Miscanthus. Which I suspect is a pre-December shoot, since it often turns golden toward Nov. & Dec.

I'm considering cutting TF once May arrives.

Well, it has been a while since I jumped into this thread so I should update on my work with Model Mayhem as I had some less than great experiences early on.

It is really working out very well for me now. I have noticed as my portfolio improves, I am getting better/more experienced models to work with me. Also have found that MUA, hair stylists, and fashion stylists make a big difference in the final result and these are much easier to get to a shoot now as well. There is nothing as fun as filling my studio with a team of creative people all working to create a great shot, and all of them are coming from Model Mayhem so I guess you can put me down as a great fan now!

Here is a thread with some photos from a shoot I did last week:

I'm beginning to feel that the experience angle is a nice way to go. Although, this newbie below worked out okay, and was prompt and enthusiastic. Still plenty of room for growth on the posing.

Messaged a couple of photographers on MM about her, hoping to boost her networking. Seems like a hard worker.

You have virtually any option you want.

Makeup and hair can be provided, but quite a few models take care of their own. A couple that I shot with were in college for cosmetology too.

I don't usually browse for "paid assignments" models, but have sent a note to a few, who have expressed willingness to trade TFP down the line. But the ones I wrote too had studio shots, and I was offering outdoors. I have shot with one of the few already.

One crazy model is bitching me for canceling a shoot, had plenty of time to cancel.
