I started a thread on this in the Business of Photography area but it may be a question better suited to the GN area...

Who do I know on POTN that also has an account on MM? I just signed up so I can start working with more models and would like to find others that I know from other sites to start building my Friends list.

My account is http://www.modelmayhem.com/jfoster

Got you both! Thanks guys.

I hope MM works. I need to branch out and start getting some good shoots set up. Doing the event stuff is fun but I don't make any money doing it. I seem to spend more than I make for some reason.

Nothing in my port there I have not posted here. I am new to the model thing, and when I joined there were not to many near me, then all of a sudden there are a lot! I have forgotten how hard it is to schedule things. Products and buildings, and the like are on a rather loose schedule.... much easier.

Thanks for the help guys. Now I've got to start working with some new models. I've lined up my makeup artist and hair stylist so I'm close to being ready. I'm also waiting to find out how much my buddy is going to charge me for his 40D and then I'll be set. Or I'll be buying a new 50D if he wants too much. Actually, I see new in the box 40D's shipped to the door for just over $800.00 so it's getting hard to wait much longer...

I'm on there too. One thing I'd like to add is that any comments on there should be taken with a grain of salt. It isn't the site that sets any standard for modeling and it won't make you rich. It's good for some information and ideas for shoots as well as networking. But POTN is much better for constructive criticism, the attitudes are minimal or non-existant and the atmosphere of POTN is near perfect. In the 2 years or so I've been on here I've yet to see the tension and rudeness that's apparent in 75% of the posts on there.

Glad to be here!

haha, no lie. If you show boobs, or softporn they think your work is priceless. It's a pretty decent place to find someone too shoot. Even if they aren't all that professional. Some people complain about a lot of flakes, but I've never had anyone setup an appt and flake. But I'm very selective...

Jon Foster

Yes, I agree. It's nothing like POTN and I don't think it could ever hope to be. But, it is a decent place to find local talent to help expand the portfolio etc. In the short time I've been on there I've found myself declining more shoots than I've accepted. No biggie, I have pictures in my head that I want to transfer to media so picking the right model and look is paramount.

Yeah, that happens all the time. After a while, you start to get a sense of who is professional and who is not.

lol, i think you guys just aren't screening the models enough. I've only had 1 flake, but it wasn't last minute. But I'm only willing to shoot the ones that have professional looking shots. The girls that are half naked with crappy photography work are the ones you have to watch out for. lol.

I think people sign up expecting it to be the end-all for free models. When in fact it is kinda more like "bottom barrel". I have not had any flake on me and am happy with the ones I have worked with. But MM is not like an agency. Nobody is accountable to anybody, and reporting bad experiences can get you banned. So you have to take it for what it is... simply a social networking site that happens to be centered arround the modeling industry.

It is also the last place I would go for advice or C&C. If you read through the forums, it is mostly Photo 50.5 questions. (As apposed to Photo 101) Sure there are some good questions there. But 90% of them I would not expect from people "working in the industry".

There's one of those who asked me for a shoot. She has one good shoot under her belt. Then she asked me what I'd pay her for nudes. Ain't happnin'. If I'm going to pay someone, it'll be an experienced model and will probably have her clothes on if she chooses.

Myspace is like just about any other networking site. Keep things up to date and let people know you're there.

Well 90% of the comments on there aren't worth anything. Comment swapping, begging for comments and all isn't of any consolation to me. I have 20 or less on most of my images but I'm not out begging to get stroked. And if they're not implied you rarely have people even looking at your work.

POTN has helped me in a lot of ways. But there are a few guys on MM who have offered some great input and I've learned from them also.

I recently signed up because it was mentioned on the Howard Stern Show. I checked it out and was thrilled to see over 60 models within 25 miles of my home studio. I have my first modelmayhem shoot on Friday, Jan 2. I've really been working on my lighting setup so I don't look like a big amateur. Well the shoot thus far was postponed until this Friday due to death in the model's family and having to travel to MN. I've been shooting so many images over the last few weeks I look forward to working with a person instead of a static object. Most of the photos go to stock but I also want to work on simple portraiture face and head shots, and 3/4 body shots. I look forward to it anyway. What amount of money do any other photographers pay, if any? I am paying a little bit for her time ($20) and also doing a tfcd. I probably shouldn't do both but I figure it will pay off in the end.

There should be a feedback mechanism like ebay to seperate the pros from the flakes. Its a great networking site for TF*, but there are a lot of unproffesional people out there. Beware of people who's accounts go away and then reappear again under a new MM#. And I never book anyone without meeting in person first and gettting full contact info unless personlly vouched for by a close professional that I've worked with.

I just had one not show up to meet for coffee to go over a shoot. She had my cell but didn't want to give me hers until after we met. I'm fine with that. She also said she would show up short of huricane or accident. No show, no call, no messsage on MM?

I've also had a few cancel last minute on a shoot. This is a pain when you have MUAs, body painters, Hair Stylists, wardrobe specialists, location rental, etc. I don't mean to be unsympathetic but when everyone gives the same excuse that their grandmother is dying, its hard not to wonder. I give them the benefit of the doubt, but don't give any more effort into rescheduling with those models.

You end up finding the select few that are easy to work with and keeping with them, but I still try to bring in a new face everyonce in a while, but its a 10:1 ratio for adding someone.

I've got a new project that I need a lot of different models for and of course to get them free it's a big pain. But it's an art project not a paid one.

I had one cancel on me last minute, will only shoot her again if she pays.
I had on cancel 2 days before the shoot. Enough notice but we had this set for 2 months. No reason given. Haven't reached out to her again.
I only shoot TF with people that I approach unless you are something exceptional.
As for paying models. I never pay, Photographers don't pay models, Agencies, publications, clients pay for models not photographers. That was drilled into my head by a pro.
Checkout Urban Stylz page on his rules of engagement for a shoot and also Ekiona. They spell it out exactly the way it works. My page will reflect same soon as I already send that out in my initial email to anyone I shoot.
Saw one shooter who keeps a list of flakes with their MM IDs on his page.

My policy is you get to cancel on me twice. After that, I won't shoot with you again. I figure if I'm what you want in a photog, then you make the effort to shoot with me.

I had one cancel on me 1 hr before the shoot- by e-mail!@@!! I haven't pursued her again, but she showed up at a group shoot I attended. I shot her, and she liked what she saw. But told her not to cancel my shoots :)

And I won't pay for a model either. I had one approach me for a plane ticket, but I'd get a 4 hr nude session with her in return. I passed- $400 for a model is crazy

This is all well and good for one with a large model portfolio or commercial studio or years of experience. I think it's not quite the same for one with only three models in their port. I am okay paying a model for her time but it's not much, $20 or $25 for two hours. I'm using the photos to sell for stock. Personally I feel better paying a few dollars. I've had several model el's that earn $18 to $25 alone. Thus I look at it as an investment. It's something that continues to earn money. I'm not like one of those people that care to profit off of somebody else, like a banker or hedgefund manager, I like karmic balance. If the model sells well, it's worth it and if not it's worth the experience to me.

As for flakes, I just had the two strikes. The first time I was told a family member had passed in MN (I'm in WI) and she would be traveling for funeral. It was to be rescheduled the following week, same time and place. Friday 11am comes and she doesn't show up. I waited one hour and she never showed up. My wife's friend who happened to have the same name stopped by to borrow something. I asked her to sit for a few portraits because I just wanted to photograph somebody.

I'm now working with a new MM model. We have an appointment set for next wednesday. I'm hoping she is normal. She is cuter anyway, more petite at 5', 95lbs and she is younger. The extra couple of weeks has allowed me to further hone my lighting skills. It's worth the pay and a chance to try a new 135 L and all the lighting techniques I've been practicing.

Lastly, has anybody ever tried a posting on craigslist? I've thought of trying a posting that says like photographer to help a model get started with portfolio, no pay type of thing. Most would probably think you are a crazy dude unless you have a website or something. Anybody try this or something similar?

I've thought about trying Craigslist and look around to see what kinds of ads are already there from time to time. But when I check them out most turn out to be for strip dancers at the bars downtown so I haven't put much hope into the idea.

I got one good model from there and then went to MM and never went back. You mainly get girls who want to be models who haven't networked yet and gotten wind of MM. I found actreses looking for head shots, wedding couples who hated their wedding shots and wanted to have them redone afterwards, artistic minded girls interested in art creation modeling.

It starts off slow on MM, but once you get a good port and images that models have on their ports it takes off and you have to really start saying no alot and you get to stop courting to the divas on their terms and make your own. Thank god I'm finally getting to that point. Of course a little marketing on the site doesn't hurt if you have a great stop and look avatar and you change it every so often.

You don't need a lot of models on your port just edgy unique pics. I only paid once and will never again. I was on a trip out of town and wanted one for sure at a scenic location. I still pay models but not for shoots - only when I need to experiment with equipment for an upcoming shoot and will not promise any pictures to the model. "Come here and sit for 2 hours why I get the setups and effects I want for $10/hr". If I happen to get a pic that's portfolio credit to me worthy then I give it to them.

I am there as well. See my sig for details. It's just an experiment, though. MM seems to be US centered (or at least English speaking countries) and I live in southern Germany, so there aren't many models on MM living nearby.

Luckily there is also MM competitor based in Germany but my experience there is mixed.

They should have some sort of feedback like on ebay.

BTW, I was able to get a model from Eqador on my visit there after talking with her on MM here in the US.

I've been thinking about making a thread here that people would leave feedback on MM people. Then you could search the thread for their MM# and see what people had to say. I would keep it to simple categories for feedback such as ....

Highly Skilled
Easy to work with
Didn't show
Cancelled last minute
Hard to work with
Unproffesional
Overall 0-5 star Rating

- Nope. OOOhh curveball.
- OK...just a few games

I do agree here - but the boobs/nude shots do get plenty of "blind praise" here too. ;)

lol, i think you guys just aren't screening the models enough. I've only had 1 flake, but it wasn't last minute. But I'm only willing to shoot the ones that have professional looking shots. The girls that are half naked with crappy photography work are the ones you have to watch out for. lol.

Exactly. I don't setup a shoot with anyone unless I've either met them for a consultation (consultation meetings rock, I usually don't even give my rates until I have the meeting), I know them from the past or they have VERY good references.

Screening people is key - regardless of what site you're on.

It will be nice to add some new photos to the port there and on stock sites.

Do the models you've worked with know that you are selling their images for stock? What if one of them happened to be on some random ad for Herpes medication, or something? (Joey Tribiani comes to mind, from 'Friends.')

Secondly, do they accept models as 'stock' photography? Just curious.
