View Full Version : HEADING TO THE DESERT...

This Saturday, I'll be waking at some ungodly hour of the morning (we called it "zero-dark-thirty" when I was in the Navy) and heading to the desert. Not sure what I'll find in the way of things to shoot, which, I think, is a large part of the reason I'm going. My intention is to be there before the sun comes up.

Any suggestions or tips on what to do or how to do it?

I'll have the 300D, 18-55 and a 70-300. I'll also have my tripod and (hopefully) the remote release I ordered the other day.

I've only got four filters; a UV and a cross-screen for each lens. Any suggestions in that department?

This thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=59157) is pretty current on possibilities, it seems.

The sandy part.

It's east of San Diego. More rugged terrain than dunes...

I was going to suggest the thread the Jon mentioned above. You're lucky to be so near Anzo Borrego. Joshua Tree is full of possibilities, too.

My father who was in the air force called it "Dark thirty " as well. My son has concocted his own description " the butt-crack of dawn." He's not fond of getting up early.

I read that other thread; thanks!

Another quick (and potentially dumb question from the new kid): Would it be a good idea to have a polarizing filter? I don't currently have one, but could pick one up tomorrow.

Benefits?

I would never think of shooting out in the desert without my circular polarizer around. Sometimes, the sun angle is all wrong, and it won't do you any good, and it will drop two stops in the process. However, when the sun angle is good, and if the sky is mostly blue, then the polarizer can make a cloud or two seem like they are going to jump right out of the sky.
