Okay guys, here's a new argument for ya. At least, it's new for me, and I'm curious... Let's pretend for a second that there's a photographer who can't always nail the exposure while using flash. Our photog is a rookie, and hasn't mastered his jedi mind control over his ETTL and FEC, or his M, SS, ISO, F-Stop, Ghosting, Demon Eyes, Horizon, Timing, Catch the Peak Action, Shoot Tight Crop Tighter, AI Servo, Center Point Focus and ESPN Game Changing Moment Skills...
Should he "Over Flash" like this...

...and in post, lower the brightness to look like this...

...or should he "Under Flash" like this...

...and in post, raise the brightness to look like this...

...It seems to me that losing some detail in the white jersey is worth it, to stop the ghosting that comes from letting in too much ambient. It seems to me that dialing down the brightness in post is better than trying to raise it. (Assuming still, that it can't be done perfect to start with.)
Technical details: Both shots were with 40D, 100-400L, 5.6, ISO 1250, 550EX Flash on M, 1/2 power; both shots taken in RAW. The "Over Flash" is with the play being closer to me than the "Under Flash" was.
Thanks in advance for the comments and advice from those who chime in.
John.
