Hi, I've got an Ixus IIs which is only about 9 months old. The coating on the metal case has deteriorated very badly where the hand touches the camera most during use. On close inspection, the coating looks almost like a black mould but it doesn't come off and it looks like the coating is flaking off the camera.
It's been cased and looker after with the same care as my EOS and Medium format equipment so I'm not sure if its a common fault or I have ended up with a camera with an odd manufacturing defect.
Has anyone else suffered similar problems ?
cheers

I have a Ixus II. No such problem. Maybe I hardly use it.

Jimbo,
I seem to have the same problem, the rear 1/2 of the casing looks as though some kind of acid has been oversprayed on it, and the shiney metal coating is coming off leaving black marks all over, I bought my daughter the same camera 1 month after mine and hers seems to be perfect but I just noticed that her docs in the box are different to mine, so maybe there is a clue in its makers?
I am extremely careful with my camera and this fault is so bad I am embarrassed to take my camera out , I will be writing to Canon about this this is definitely a manufacturing fault, my camera was cased some two weeks ago, I only got it out last night only to find the damage.
I have some photos if anyone wants to see and am also open to any advice.

Jimbo,

Do you have a leather camera case which you use, I certainly do.

For anyone concerned with Blackspotting/Staining on the surface of the Digital Ixus IIs Camera case.
This is a known fault some sort of chemical reaction taking place when stored in some leather camera cases. I,ve contacted Canon repair center
at :
CANON UK. RCC
PO BOX 630
BOREHAM WOOD
WD6 9AW
tel 0875 143723
who are fully aware of the problem, they advised to send the camera here for a free of charge replacement case. I received the camera back this morning 6 working days later and its now in pristine condition.:D with a brand new case, slightly darker surface but almost un-noticeably different to the original.
Well done Canon:D
reading various bits about the problem it would appear that the offer may end in july 05 so if you know anyone with the problem tell them sharpish.
regards
Pavski
