I'm strongly considering starting a local photography club/discussion group for the purpose of getting kids involved, teaching them, learning from them and also a time for adults in the community to get together, share images, discuss/critique, etc.

Any advice, experience, thoughts?

Is there an audience for this type of club in ur immediate area. Ive tried it in my community a few years ago, but it was mostly film photography and it didnt work out in the longterm. Might be different with digital, but its hard to get these type of things started with enough ongoing interest unless u got a big audience.

Well, I think the audience is there. I know that there are several people at least. I don't know that I would get a 'big' crowd, but any crowd would be fun to share with I think.

Look at the local high school. I am sure you could find some interest. Maybe too late for getting much done this year but, you could get them into sports photography next year. If it is thru the high school you could get sideline access for just about all the games.

You might look for people with similar interests (besideds photography). Our group likes camping and hiking. Cameras range from point and shoot to prosumer to dslr. A week of 2 after a campout and hike, we'll get together for dinner and everyone has a chance to share their pictures. It's always a fun evening.

any more info on this?
i was wondering about this as well.
kinda sucks being so far from things. well it can make for good pics and all, but not good for interests.

i am hoping with the photo classes i will be taking over the next couple months i come away with some playtime with other glass, learning about photography and mayb others who are into shooting to have shooting partners.

If you go on-line and search you can see a number of club web sites. Start with PSA clubs. This will tell you what other clubs are doing. I hope to have our clubs web site on line in the next 2 months. Our club was started in 1932 and the member ship has been as few as 6 to over a 100. Currently we have 38 active members. PSA is a big help with information on clubs.

i did a search last fall for photo clubs in MN but came up empty for stuff way up north here. a few near the twin cities and i think one near St Cloud, but nothing aimed at up way up north.
it is about 4 hrs each way to St. Cloud and about 6 each way to Minneapolis/St. Paul. so not exactly a first choice.
