One picture I took last January when I got my new camera. It's a picture of Nubble Light in York, ME. C&C welcome, always looking to learn more!

I'm still learning too, so for what it's worth... It seems kinda busy to me. All the stuff around it pulls the eye away from the lighthouse. Otherwise it seems nice and sharp :)

I would lose the telephone poles. Also, it looks a little tilted to the right. Or maybe it's just my stroke acting up.

Well, my biggest issue here looks like the common newbie mistake of putting the subject dead center in the image. The first thing I would recommend is reading up on "the rule of thirds" in regards to composition. The light, color and exposure all look pretty good here, but to me the composition really makes this just look like a touristy snap shot.
Secondly and also in regards to composition, while I don't know what kind of access you had to this area, I'm not really crazy about the angle this shot was taken at. I think the subject matter is quite lovely (I really like old light houses) but to me it doesn't really look like much thought was put into the composition here. I would have moved around the area and looked at this from various angles (if possible considering the water line) before I ever broke out the camera and started shooting.
Seriously...I'd read up on composition in general. Learn the elements that make a great composition as that's the single thing (in my ever so humble opinion) that separates great photography from snap shots. Further, if lighthouse are your thing, then there are MANY great images of lighthouses around on the internet...look at them, study them and compare them to your shot here. Learn from your mistakes and you'll do better next time :D.
Just my $.02 worth,
Jim

Yeah I love that light house more than most in the area, the only thing is that it is extremely difficult to shoot using just the kit lens on my XTi since its on an island and there are not many angles from the mainland i can shoot from... thanks for the tips though!
