I have a 40D that takes the BP-511A battery of course. I'm looking for a car charger because I'll be taking a trip next year where AC power may not be available, but I will have a vehicle.

Canon makes the CG-570 Dual battery charger ($90 at B&H), but you need to also buy the CB-570 cord that makes the unit work with the cigarette lighter in the car ($35 at B&H). Between those two pieces, that's $125 for a car charger -- kinda expensive. Anybody know of or had good luck with a cheaper solution? I've seen a few on eBay but am not sure of the quality.

Any input would be helpful.

Thanks.

why not get an inverter so you can charge your camera batteries, laptop, mp3 player, and just about anything else on the go?

a 300w inverter will cover your laptop and charger easily.

I use an inverter too. It works and is cheaper.

Thanks guys. I'm not familiar with inverters. Where can I find out more about these?

Try google. They should be common at Auto parts stores / electronics stores, or if your Canadian, Canadian Tire.

Pick up the Sterlingtek charger. It does AC (100-240V 50-60 Hz) or 12 V auto, and includes the auto cable. Under $20.

I recommend this also, works well. Saved my tail while on vacation.

This is what I have and it works well.

If you decide to go the inverter route.. be sure you research the difference between pure sine wave and modified sine wave inverters. Pure sine wave ARE more expensive; but won't kill electronics over time.

Man...the last couple of days I've bumped into some real jerks on here...soooo I'm gonna set a nice-guy example.

I ordered a home/car charger kit for BP511s from hvstar.net It's THREE dollars. So...if you want to wait until mine gets here (I'm guessing another 2 weeks or so), I can test to see if it works. If it does, I think you should order one...if it doesn't, well...then you'll have learned from my experience without spending any of your money :)

OK, I'll admit it, I also use an inverter.

 You gotta be kidding. I don't want to worry about this. Sine waves, cosine waves, hyperbolic arc cosine waves -- feh! I'm just not going there, so inverters are out.

Based on the above, getting a charger from Sterlinktek or hvstar.net is the simplest solution. It will do what I need done without a lot of effort or expense on my part. I've done business with hvstar.net before (ordered a bunch of filters) and I've seen good reports of Sterlingtek batteries and other products on this board.

Thanks to all who have responded.

DON"T TRY to use an inverter, it actually can blow out your AC adapter due to a cheap invertor outputting square waves rather than sine waves...trust me, I cooked a Motorola cell phone adapter that way!

Just buy the combo AC/car adapter charger, with input from 110-240V AC or from 12V DC, and charges BP-511 batteries. Some sources...
