Yuk... Gotta tell you... I'm the biggest freakin baby when it comes to spiders. Even seeing the tiniest ones would send me into a little tizzy. I've decided to work on my fears of them because it's kind of embarrassing to be an adult afraid of something so small. Anyway, over the past couple of days I've caught and released several spiders from my house. Don't get me wrong, they still gross the hell out of me, but they honestly do more good alive than they do dead.

The spider would have more likely been scared of you than you of it. I'm an arachnophobe myself, but I would never kill them. I might sweep them up and throw them into the garden, but I wouldn't consider ending the life of one just because I happen to walk into one.
Interesting shot, though.

That's disgusting lol.
I hate spiders, but still.. a photo of it intact would've been nice. Something about the skin and mucus being all over the place that just .. doesn't make a good photo haha.

Would of preferred it to be photographed alive, unless it was a real dangerous spider, which obviously, most are not

Interesting thread actually. I agree though...one shouldn't kill them. I admit that I'm freaked out by spiders but only big ones lol...the Huntsman is pretty common here but I haven't seen (thankfully) a big one for ages...although there was one the size of a 20 cent piece on our wall the other night. My wife and I simply captured it in a glass and took it outside to free it. Using the MPE lens has had the effect of somewhat desensitizing my phobia...the smallest spider (jumping spider for example) takes on a whole new dimension through that lens...sometimes making me jump as it does when photographing it. In the end I reckon I'll reduce my phobia by simply photographing these creatures:)

Out of 35,000 species of spiders, only 27 have venom strong enough to kill a human. I used to work in pits with black widows everywhere. I mean, like 2 feet from my head. They never bothered me and I never bothered them.
Posting a pic of a spider you killed by having a choice to kill is just an insult to the members on this forum. But, I think you knew that and obviously you got the reaction you were looking for.

I have been trying to figure out how to respond to this thread. I have very mixed emotions on this topic. I have arachnophobia really bad and macro photography has helped me to try to overcome many of my fears. However there are times I backslide and my fear sadly takes control.
A while back I posted in the macro talk about a red and black spider that jumped at me. My instinct was black widow and squish it. Before I could think I already reacted. I has very upset at myself for killing this beautiful creature. I could have never taken a picture of it and posted it! I was just too upset that I reacted any other way. I should have grabbed my camera but instead I freaked like a little girl!
When I first saw this picture the image that flashed in my mind was that little red and black jumper I killed. I went through all those emotions and disappointment once again. I just cannot imagine someone coming to a forum where people go out of their way to not only find bugs but have the patience and respect for nature to photograph them. It is sort of like showing up at a Vegan Pot Luck with meat dishes wearing nothing but fur (and no I am not Vegan). It is about having respect for others even if your views are different.

I try to move any spiders I find outside, I cannot kill anything I find in my house besides mosquitos and ants. Spiders actually eat other household pests, so maybe you aren't giving them a fair chance. They wont harm you.
