Graduated Neural Density & Canon D-60:

I have two B&W graduated “grau” neutral density filters at 25% and 50% strengths. When they lay on a white sheet of paper, I can easily see the differences in graduated coverage.

At the risk of sounding DUHHH…when I mount each one on my Canon D-60, I see no difference through the viewfinder and on the LCD screen. Hence, I’m unable to rotate these filters to effectively meet my image needs.

Am I missing something blatantly obvious to all of you out there? Suggestions welcomed.

Thanks,

M I k e

Grad NDs come in two flavours hard edge and soft edge. The Hard edge has very marked transition from ND to clear region and the soft edge has a smooth gradual transition. Each of these flavours are available in different strength like .4 .6 etc.

Now the rule is if you are using a Wide engle lens, you should use soft edge and for normal to tele lens, you should use hard edge. If you do the reverse, then the transition will be so gradual that you may not be able to see it in your view finder.

Last point, check the grad effect by pressing the depth of field preview button as stopping down will enhance the effect.
