I am looking for a book/text that would be a good resource and that teaches photography. For sailing/powerboating everyone knows of Chapmans as the authoratitive text. Does one exsist for photography? Are there good web pages if a text does not exsist. I have O'Reilly's Digital Photography "expert techniques" which is quite good, and it has good chapters on PSCS. I was hoping for something mre complete.

If I may throw a twist in here:

What are the classic college photography textbooks?

I don't know of any all inclusive book that is like a bible, but the timelife books have been in the libraries for years I can remember reading them as a youngster. There must be at least twenty of them and they pretty much cover every topic.

I like John Shaw's (http://www.johnshawphoto.com/books.htm) books ... but they're specifically geared for outdoor/nature/landscape photography.

"Photograpy" by London and Upton is the standard text in many college photo courses, as are the books by Henry Horenstein.http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0131896091/qid=1109352283/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_4/103-7170757-8982224?v=glance&s=books

British authour Michael Langford has done some very comprehensive books on general photography http://books.elsevier.com/us//focalbooks/us/subindex.asp?maintarget=&isbn=&country=United+States&srccode=&ref=&subcode=&head=&pdf=&basiccode=&txtSearch=&SearchField=&operator=&order=&community=focalbooks

"Basic Photographic Materials and Processes" by Leslie Stroebel is probably the best scientific text on photography http://books.elsevier.com/us//focalbooks/us/subindex.asp?maintarget=&isbn=&country=United+States&srccode=&ref=&subcode=&head=&pdf=&basiccode=&txtSearch=&SearchField=&operator=&order=&community=focalbooks

Check the Focal Press website thoroughly. They have many of the standard texts on photography.
