The current 400 2.8 IS is almost 10 years old. I'm considering taking advantage of the instant rebate on this lens. Do you guys think it will be updated any time soon? Thank you.

what wrong with the current lens?

1. It's heavy.
2. It's got Image Stabilization. ;)

I couldn't imagine the weight being decreased significantly without the cost skyrocketing. More special elements means less weight but a helluva increased cost.

I have a question, why do you need IS? Can you handhold a 400mm?

If you want to handhold get the 400mm 5.6

If you want to use the 400mm 2.8 IS for more that 10 minutes at a time get a Gitzo monopod or Tripod.

Yeah it's that's good but it's that heavy

You don't need IS, no you cannot handhold a 400 all that successfully unless you came at least 3rd in a national body building championship.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the current lens. I haven't used it but hear nothing but good things about it. I do know that it is heavy.

I was just thinking now that they put IS4 on the 200 f2.0 that they might update this lens and perhaps the 300 while they were at it. Canon seems to be coming out with a number of II versions lately. The 85mm f1.2, was there anything wrong with the original?? 24mm II, 16-35 II ??

I don't want to buy something that could be replaced real soon, so I thought I'd ask the question in the rumors section. Thanks for the replies guys.

I hope they don't update the 300 2.8.. I only bought it a little while ago! :p

i think the 85 was overdue for an update to get a faster USM onto it. Its a really old design from the first gen of EF L lenses if i'm not mistaken. Same with the 50mm

Not sure about the 24 but the 16-35 mk1 really is rubbish in terms of distortion and edge sharpness and canon desperately needed something that could at least compete with the N17-35 let alone the 14-24. The 16-35 mk2 seems to at least be better than the old in that respect.

The 300 and 400 are well established industry leaders and i don't think they'll be replaced all that soon. As for IS, well, unless u use it on a tripod, the 400 will need IS on a monopod for better stability. YMMV...

What's the problem? Will your lens suddenly stop working or something?
