View Full Version : are digital cameras still behind film in quality?

In my opinion it's not much of an issue of behind, but different.

Oh the debates that can come from this thread. Some people would answer your question both ways, YES, and NO. I will leave it at that. Some things are better left unsaid!

Film is an artsy, expensive and esoteric medium. With the advent of digital photography, no longer suitable or cost effective for everyday practical imaging. For specific expressive purposes, it will always be around, just as film never killed off all artistic painting of landscapes or portraiture.

My old college instructor insisted that photography must be learned using a film camera. I bet there are probably instructors who think the same way still around, but I'm sure they'll be dead soon.

I learned on a film camera and it has most definitely helped me now that I'm shooting digital. Features of both are going to be better for some than for others so YET AGAIN, it comes down to preference, ease of use, etc. I will shoot film again because the processing is so much fun.

It is a maxim among film photographers that film must by nature be better than digital.

Digital photographers, on the other hand, are too busy "spraying and praying" to be bothered with the question.

OK, Snake, I'll step up to the plate.

I always preferred shooting "available light" with my Nikon F. For B&W I'd shoot Tri-X pushed to 800 as a rule. Sometimes I'd try to push ASA 400 color film.

Those shots at high ASA were much, much grainier (noisier) than ISO 6400 on any of our DSLRs.

At any ISO (ASA) above 100 digital always wins.

I think the "quality" of digital is just as good if not better than film, but they are different animals. You can do magic with both.

What's the quality yardstick though?

- Total Resolution?
- Dynamic Range?
- Noise/Grain?
- Color Accuracy?
- "Yeah, I kinda like that one..."?

Let's face it... You can create dreck with a Phase One and/or you can make a masterpiece that's only 800x @ 72dpi (as most work here on POTN will attest...*Cough*)

Pass the Snow Caps please...

The EOS 1DsMkII @ 16MP definitely beat 35mm film for pure resolution in 2004. (some tests showed that the 11MP 1Ds did so, but this was a close call so the outcome was still "debatable". Not so since 2004)

Now we also (we being digital) had the color accuracy crown over ANY film since the 10D's introduction in 2003.
Add to that digital's abilities to operate at the extreme ISO we crave, with FAR batter clarity and detail than any film, and to me it's a total slam dunk, and that's just based on IQ and results alone.
Take into account all the benefits of Digital that would be there even if film was "better" and we have a very clear winner.

there is a reason that film cameras are a dieing breed. they have been replaced like the 8 track... and like the 8 track with good reason.

Not sure if you mean the UK Gadget Show? They shot in a studio at ISO400. What the heck is that all about?? They didn't mention once anything about any retouching, colour correction and all that lovely stuff. But yeah, digital 'won'. Seemed a bit ridiculous the way they did it, but there you are.

The old days of film when you took a shot and had to wait for the roll to finish and get it developed was useless. With the cameras of today you cannot go wrong.

I love film, I think it's beautiful and I will never get over the total thrill of unrolling a film off a spiral and holding my breath as I see all my negs. I also have a G9 for family snaps etc but have gone back to using my EOS5 and a roll of Superia because it's far easier and hugely less time consuming (and costs the same)

As for digital, I've been using the 5D (my husbands) but it's only very recently that I've been getting more excited about digital. If I'm honest 3200 film was just too grainy most of the time and for me this is where digital really has it's advantages as I only use available light for portraits.

Is one better? No, I'd say they are just different. I'll still use film and I'm loving the 5D Mark2 my husbands just bought (what's his is mine and all that ;))

However, Lambrettas are better than Vespas!

The days of film are coming to an end.

Since this debate is happening at all tells us something. Five years ago (about when this thread was started) it really was a decent debate.

Not anymore, because right now it's neck and neck, but five years from now it won't be even close.

I remember well, however, picking up envelopes of prints and boxes of slides and rushing home to open the presents, so-to-speak.

Now I rush in the house, download the photos, and nervously tap my fingers for two or three minutes as the pictures download.

Same feeling, faster time.

I still have a surf magazine from a couple years back showing a pro photographer wearing a t-shirt that says "death before digital".

I wonder if he still wears that shirt.

It depends....

Here is an extreme technical example. I just got out of a darkroom this morning after developing XRAY sheets used in a process called Western Hybridization (its a Biology thing). Anyhow, I'm getting better results with this than a 25,000$ Kodak molecular imaging system that uses a cooled CCD digital camera.

I know its somewhat of an odd example, I just included it as an example to show that film is not always inferior to digital.
