I'm going to be shooting a State Championship yacht race this weekend (purely amateur, both me and the boats), and would like any guidance on what I should be metering off. The 3 main components in the frame will be the sky, dark water and white sails. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Depends a bit on which you see as being the important details. If you are aiming for the classical people hanging offf the edge then they are key and I would probably use centre weighted and possibly even then bracket the shots by a stop.
