don't forget taxes and customs which adds to the US-price and the difference won't be that great anymore...
Another thing is to go for the weekend to NY, buy things at B&H and bring them back (don't get caught at the customs). Depending on the amount, the difference pays your trip...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com ship to me in New Zealand with no problems at all. Even after shipping and taxes I save quite a bit compared with buying locally.

It is very important to check and be aware of the impact of the warrenty offered with goods shipped overseas or bought on a holiday. A Canon USA warrenty will not be honoured by Canon Europe, requiring you to ship any faulty/damaged goods back to Canon USA.
International warrenties are often available for lenses and will be honoured by Canon Europe, but international warrenties are not available for cameras. So, if your 20D breaks, you will require you to ship the camera back to the vendor in the USA.

Currently I'm looking for a good deal an a 100-400L IS.
At BH it's about $1400
Around here the lowest I've found is about 1400Euro
1Euro=$1.3
so the lens at BH would be about 1100Euro
add to that taxes (15%) and customs(3% on optics) and you're at about 1300, add BH Shipping (about 30Euro for Europe) and I'm at 1330.
There's 30Euro more to pay for the administrative handling at the customs.
That means 40Euro economy.
When I'm having a problem, the worst case would be to send it back.
If I buy it locally, I go to the shop and they exchange it or something like that.
The other idea would be to make the trip to NY (looked it up : about 400Euro for the flight), buy it at BH in the store, add some 200-300Euro for the weekend expenses.
So if I pay 300 more than if buying locally, I get a trip to NY for the WE for the price.
Ok, I'll have to pass the lens through customs attached to the cam as if I had it for ever and hope not to get caught.
But the same thing when having a problem...

I've shopped from BHphoto and KEH, no problems with them, except that BHphoto wants your front and rear copy of credit card faxed or emailed.
