View Full Version : PMA Was A Bust For New Lenses - When Will They Come?

I felt sure Canon would announce a bunch of new lenses at PMA. The rebates were pointing to several old designs that could use refreshing for digital. But the EF-S 60mm Macro was it for PMA.

What is the next event that they would use to pop this on us? Do they need an event, or could they just decide to announce them?

I want to know how long to wait before expanding or updating my arsenal. I could use a long zoom by late April, but if they are not going to upgrade the 100-400 L, I may have to consider Brand X - not my favorite thought.

Maybe you should buy a Leica M7 and a couple of lenses. That might slow you down a bit. Smiles

I read somewhere else (another forum) that someone heard some Canon people talking about June-July for some new lenses.
I know this is one of those 'I heard it from someone who heard it from someone...." lines and I am not normally one to spread rumors but I questioned this from a manufacturers point of view. Why release a bunch of lenses after one of the largest industry events when you could be getting all the interest and press form that event.
I do agree that the rebates were probably to clear out a bunch of stock (and I just got my rebate check yesterday, woohoo). Look at the drebel to the new one for example...
BUT, even though this is a rumor, I would sure like to see a couple of new lenses and lens upgrades form Canon. I was disappointed that there were not more announcements from Canon at PMA. I am starting to look for more L glass myself.

Were you dropped on your head as a baby, repeatedly? You can never have too many lenses.

I would vote for the 28-135. That would fit what my wants/needs perfectly. And at a f2.8-4, could it be less than $950 too?? :D
Actually, I would even take it without the IS...

New lenses: Photokina in the fall.

Don't hold your breath on an updated non-push-pull 100-400/L. Look at the trends in what has been released. A replacement will probably have an EF-S mount, would be a F5.6 just like the current lens, and would cost $2000+.

This term,. "Too many lenses" ??

What does it mean?

It defies logic,. it does not compute... :)

Could someone explain to me the difference and packing order of EF, EF-S and L lenses?

Many thanks.

"L" Lenses are deluxe (pro) lenses in the EF lens product line. They are refered to as EF-L lenses. All EF lenses (including the "L"'s) will fit on all EOS cameras.

EF-S stands for short back focus varient of the standard EF mount, and WILL NOT FIT on a standard EF mount. EF-S lenses only fit on EF-S mount EOS cameras. Standard EF lenses (including the "L"'s) will also fit on the EF-S mount.

EF-S lenses, because they only cover the smaller APS-C sensor in the 1.6 crop cameras, are cheaper to manufacture than EF lenses of same focal length. The EF-S lenses tend to be wider because the need for wide lenses is more acute when shooting on a 1.6 crop camera.

Of course, since the market for EF-S lenses are really hot. . .they are priced signficantly higher than EF lenses with similar build characteristics
