To my horror I experienced error 01 when I put my extender on. Need to test that further.

Wow, that's ugly :-) But the lens is sharp. I would like to see some taken hand held in low light at the same shutter speed to see how well the IS works.

EDIT: Hmm did You edit Your post, I could have sworn You asked if it was shot handheld?

I did (sorry), I saw tripod listed in your original post so I edited it. But I would like to see a test of just how slow your shutter speed can get before IS is no longer effective.

Minimal, just the normal PS CS, resize for web with Fred Miranda plugin which does a little sharpening. The crop was not sharpened other than what the conversion from raw did. I think the value was 45.

Yeah :D I am just as impressed right now with that result. Now I just have to find time to really use it, unfortunately I don't think I will get many oportunities this weekend :(

Wow, that is nice!
I would like to hear more about this error with the extender.
What camera, and was it a canon 1.4x?

20D and it is the Canon 1,4x.

I tried a few shots later and did not get any errors so far. Hopefully I can test the lens and extender more during the weekend.

I got the error after 1 or 2 photos with the extender on. I was in Av mode and the shutter time changed to 00 when I clicked the shutter I got an err 01.

Stupid question of the day..... how do you define 100% crop?

A crop of the original and no resize.

Stupid question of the day..... how do you define 100% crop? Not resized or scaled. Each pixel is 100% (1 for 1) cropped from the original image.

I've been busting my brain debating either this lens or the 400F5.6L.
Since I already have 190F2.8L with my 135F2L and 1.4x Extender, I often wonder how much more reach that 110mm will give me with the 300F4L.

Impressive shots with that lens! I wish you good weather so we can see test shots outdoors.

But since you have the 190 f/2.8 already, you can get the 400 f/5.6, and the with the extender you'd have 190 f/2.8, 266 f/4, 400 f/5.6 and 560 f/8. Go the other way, though, you have 190 f/2.8, 300 f/4 IS and 420 f/5.6 IS.

Tough call....

Good points.
I wonder how fast the focus speed is with the 300F4L and 1.4x extender.

Oh hell yeah!

This is the next lens on my lineup, steller.

I too want the IS and short focus distance...so i'm going the 300 f/4 + 1.4tcon.

My 300 f/4 is on the way to its new home in Canada. It is a great piece, but you only need so many ways to shoot 300mm. I'm now down to just 3 now  .

Congratulations, Tommy. Enjoy it.

Without the extender the AF is fast. With it is noticable slower, not bad but slower.

I have a 20D, maybe belmondo knows if it is faster on 1 series body with the extender.

If belmondo paid attention to those things, he could probably answer this, Unfortunately, he has no idea.

If he goes out in the morning, perhpas he'll do some experimenting.

A little update.

I have been to the zoo again to use the lens a little more. I got good results, I got some good shots of the leopards (see thread in nature & animals).

Below was shot with the 1,4x extender on. I have not had the error 01 since the one I got on the first day.

I also tried shooting an owl in flight... But that did not result in any good photos :( I think I will just explain that with my fingers was frozen to ice.
