My wife and I are planning to drive to Florida from Toronto, Canada, in May. Our likely route will take us through the following states: New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
We'd appreciate hearing from fellow birders in those states on what they consider the must-see spots in their state. I know we won't be able to hit them all, but our route plan will depend on this input and other research we are doing.
Also, if any Florida birders are up to it, a list of what they consider the Top 10 Florida birding locations. I have several books that are Florida-specific, but it's always nice to hear from real people.
Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
Jim

Isn't "Hawk Mountain" in Penn somewhere? (or is it Ohio)

Not sure when the migration is though...
Anyway,. I'm nt on your route so other than the above I have nothing to offer :)

Definitely Hawk Mountain (http://www.hawkmountain.org/default.shtml) in PA if it's in season (April to mid-May), although from the sound, you'll be going somewhat west of there.

You may want to go along the Blue Ridge Parkway for a stretch. If you get off the road you should be ahead of the tourists and able to check for the early sping birds. Grandfather Mountain, NC may be good then.

The best time to visit Hawk Mountain is during the Fall migration. That's when a lot of raptors pass through this corridor on their way South. These same birds must take a different route going back North since Hawk Mountain doesn't seem to be as busy during the Spring as it is during the Fall.
