Best way is to always shoot in colour and convert in PS CS to B&W.
Sure, the Desaturate option in PS CS usually gives farily poor results, but there are million other ways of doing it within PS CS. Color mixer widget is a good starter, switch it to monochrome and play with the sliders.
In addition, there are plenty of PS actions out there to do B&W, have a Google.
Cheers

What I am after is to take, with the camera if possible, a black and white shot. If not, how do I get a gray scaled rep. of a color image in PS CS? Or sipia(sp) for that matter.

I personally feel black and white looks best when printed on good quality paper from a local lab and I feel film yields the best contrast and feel for me--I use Kodak Tri-X or T400CN (C41) is a favorite of mine. For as often as I want to shoot black and white a roll or two isn't much IMO.
Yes I just said that in the digital forum, but I also get razzed for still using my Elan 7 from time to time, take it for what it's worth.
Else, I convert in Photoshop 7 at this point.

I have PS 7 as well.....the question is still HOW do I do it? I've looked and can't seem to find it. I know I'm a pain....please help anyway. :-) Something along the lines of....Yo idiot, click on this, then on that and then on this and you are there, would work

I have heard that there are black and white CF cards. From what I have read, they produce better results than shooting in color and post-processing.
I have no idea what I am talking about or where to find cards like these. I would buy one if I could find one here in Korea.
Somebody with experience will surely help me out here eventually.

Image >> adjust >> grayscale?
Then play with the color and contrast to taste, else I'm sure their are a million plug ins.
I use the plug-ins from my Canon Printer with photoshop, I also have some from my film scanner that I use, but those won't help you.

On the 1Ds there is no setting for black and white. All images will be shot in color.
I highly doubt there is such a thing as a black and white CF card either.

Wish that worked, however neither PS 7 nor PS CS has "grayscale" that I can find.

I must say CDS, I was expecting you to come over and confirm my post, but now you have totally rejected it.
I swear that I have read about b+w cf cards. I consider you to be one of the most credible posters here so I want to believe you SOOOOO bad.
I'm so confused.

I could be wrong,. I guess,. it's certainly been known to happen
I've not heard anything like this though except in the joke thread regarding the Fuji CF cards,.. it just seems it would be nearly impossible for a card manufacturer to be able to address the files of every camera type/brand out there reliably and make the color alterations.

Are you sure, I just did this from my menu's?
Go to Image menu in the title bar...then the MODE >
Then choose grey scale....?

I totally agree. It seems stupid but I swear I have read about it here at least twice. Oh well. Don't worry, I am researching it like crazy right now. Couldn't you just make a 2-bit cf card (oh wait, I see those everywhere). Crap, that sounds really stupid. I'll get back to y'all.

Nope. Maybe it was just a strange dream. It would be nice though.

I hope most of you are just kidding.
If you want to create good B&W images try this tip from one of the masters but *don't* expect the camera to do as well as the computer, it just doesn't have the power or the options. I still consider the "B&W" settings to be worthless.

You could use "Fred Miranda BW Workflow Pro" Phtoshop plug-in:

I second this... I've been extreamly happy with the result this plug-in offers.
Not just B&W, but DuoToane as well, with intensity settings...

I use a pretty complicated process. I wont reveal it all but will give you a general Idea.
Convert to B&W>>
make it a little bit noisy>>
add more dynamic range>>
(I use B&W workflow pro for the above three)
Duplicate original and adjust its blending to one of the "light" filters and lower opacity>>
duplicate original and run special highlight shadow adjustment>>
Run curves and adjust some more>> I sometimes do three different curves masks
create a -100 saturation mask>>
below it add a photo filter mask with custom colour>>
then on the top run another photo filter mask with another custom colour>>
flatten and sharpen the image.
I love the outcome it gives me, and it also gives me a unique but consistent look.

Wow. I was really serious. I am now convinced that I dreamed about the black and white cf card. It doesn't make any sense I know. I have had much more ridiculous dreams about cameras but I have never believed them.
Maybe it shows how serious I am about photography instead of making me look like a total moron.
