In 1965 Roky Erickson co-founded the 13th Floor Elevators in Austin, Texas and became one of the seminal figures in psychedelic rock.
In 1968, after being arrested in Texas for the possession of one joint and faced with a possible 10-year prison sentence, Roky plead not guilty by reason of insanity and was sent to the Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where he was subjected to electro convulsive shock and Thorazine treatments, until his release from custody in 1972.
Upon his release Roky, now exhibiting the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia and under the care of his mother, who withheld his medication, entered into a long period of creative decline.
In 2001 Roky's younger brother, Sumner, was granted legal custody and as a result Roky began receiving effective medical and psychological therapy, as well as legal aid to regain control of his royalties.
In 2007 Roky preformed again for the first time in over 15 years and has since preformed several concerts including this show at the El Rey that I was privileged to attend Halloween night.
