A40 exposure in dimly lit room

Have a new A40 - just got it. taking portait with subject in middle of dimly lit room. auto gives very dark room background but subject is sharp. slow sync flash gives more correct balance of lighting of subject and room but subject is not as crisp. any suggestions?
